وَلَيلَةٍand a night أَحيَيتُهاI stayed awake through it بِالراحِwith the wine
وَلَيلَةٍ أَحيَيتُها بِالراحِ
نُحسِنَةٍpleasant (reading uncertain) مُسيئَةِcruel الصَباحِthe dawn
نُحسِنَةٍ مُسيئَةِ الصَباحِ
And a night I spent awake with wine,
A night I brought to life with ease
Pleasant [reading uncertain], yet cruel at dawn,
A beautiful night, yet dawn brought unease
أَهَنتُI scorned فيهاin it سَخَطَwrath اللَواحِthe reproachers
أَهَنتُ فيها سَخَطَ اللَواحِ
أُكابِرُI defy الأَصواتَthe voices بِالأَقداحِwith the winecups
أُكابِرُ الأَصواتَ بِالأَقداحِ
In it I scorned the reproachers’ wrath,
Wherein I humbled tablet’s rage
I defy the voices with winecups.
Loud voices with cups did assuage
