ياAh رُبَّhow many إِخوانٍbrothers صَحِبتُهُمُI kept company with them
يا رُبَّ إِخوانٍ صَحِبتُهُمُ
لاnot يَملِكونَthey possess لِسَلوَةٍfor forgetting قَلباa heart
لا يَملِكونَ لِسَلوَةٍ قَلبا
Ah, how many brothers I have kept company with,
My Lord, I have found myself in the company of brothers
who have no heart that can forget!
Who possess no comfort for a weary heart.
لَوif تَستَطيعُcould نُفوسُهُمtheir souls فَقَدَتwould lose
لَو تَستَطيعُ نُفوسُهُم فَقَدَت
أَجسادُهاtheir bodies وَتَعانَقَتand would embrace one another حُبّاout of love
أَجسادُها وَتَعانَقَت حُبّا
If their souls could, they would shed
If only their souls could transcend;
their bodies and embrace out of love.
Their bodies lost, in a loving embrace.
