Youth has come to a halt, yet you follow its folly.

You do not desist at the warning of gray hair, though it has admonished you.

Oh, the ignorance of your heart, its good sense left idle!

If only its good sense had approached its folly, or matched it!

The lands of fear now slam their gate

Against me; my limit now lies short of them.

They left the burning thirst of longing within my ribs

In fragments; then counted how it had been, and guided her [wording unclear].

    فَإِذا نَجِيُّ الفِكرِ حَرَّكَهُ وَهى

    Love and passionate grief have worn out the thread of his tears;

So whenever thought's confidant stirs it, it gives way.

No bed where he lays his side gives him rest,

Until morning, amid tossing and sighing.

Good fortune passed; I had not known its worth

Until it ended; I recognized it only when it ended.

I squandered it half-asleep, floundering through deep waters

With my hand; then Time awakened it and gave warning.

    مَنكورَةٍ أَعطَت فُؤادي ما اِشتَهى

    Nothing equals the days that passed with their pleasures;

Unappreciated, they gave my heart whatever it desired.

Those days of my life in my prime, and the station

I held, and my dominion over the eyes of oryxes.

    فَالآنَ قَد وَعَظَ المَشيبُ وَفَوَّها

    And I was ignorant of what a young man ignores in youth;

So now gray hair has admonished me and spoken out.

So now Time has lifted its veil

Before my inward sight; I have settled in the house of reason.

And I delighted, among the soul's pleasures, in a graceful maiden

Whose singing echoes the lovesick doves.

And she seemed, while the drinking companions listened to her,

A wasting invalid who nodded his head, then moaned [uncertain reading].

And a warning from two eyes within her lids,

Which have known no torment of tears to draw them forth.

And the wine ewer among us seemed

A bewildered gazelle towering on a height.

When the cupbearers urged it on, it bent toward her,

Then wept over the drinking companion's cup and laughed aloud.

An age's blessings have passed, sweet as they were,

And I remained, living on in sickness, distraught.

O you whose cloak signals hostility,

Turn back with your plotting, willing or forced.

Alert when blame's orator rises to speak,

Yet when praise's orator addresses him, he grows inattentive.

    مَن سَلَّ سَيفَكَ لِلعُقوقِ فَقَد وَهى

    Never be deceived by one who promises you support;

Whoever draws your sword for ingratitude has already weakened.

And indeed my need burdens ʿĪdiyya camels,

Desert spirits that plunder the trackless wastes.

On fetters' wings they flew, full of confidence,

As they traveled, pounding the wide-mouthed road.

Lean-bellied, shaped by herbage, they are brides,

Likenesses of creatures whose most spirited have not been pierced [wording unclear].

When they reached the water, they left thirst behind,

And emerged convalescent from the sickness of the burning noons.

And I have witnessed war, its bright swords flashing,

And seen faces of the ghoul of death.

And I have seen cruelty from an age's companions,

And reached the most luxurious bliss I hoped for.

And I have done what the noble have done; it is only

The giving of lavish gifts that wins people the greatest praise.

And I have unsealed my opponents' ears with an argument

Bright white, healing the man born blind through eloquence.

Indeed, when Time shows sense, I surely speak,

And I fell silent when I saw a foolish age.
