And youths whose souls doubt never penetrates,

    Upholding an unbroken resolve.

When the star floated in the sea of darkness, they joined

The cord of night travel to a brisk trot without delay,

Until, when daybreak routed their night

With an army of light's troops spread abroad,

And the cock beat his wings in yearning and grief

For the darkness, and called to them with cries for help.

His frame sways from the stupors of sleep,

Like one walking on a drum, urged onward.

And he broke its seal from the mouth of one kept in store,

Among the wine jars, ancient and inherited.

Its bottle revives this one and kills that one,

So people are either slain or raised to life.

I ask God to grant me love's tenderness from a young gazelle

Who mingles his eyes' masculinity with femininity.

And love has appeared in my tears and in my gaze,

So ask for no tales beyond what ails me.
