Ah, many a day I have known whose daylight was brief—
Ah, many a day was mine whose daylight was brief,
brief as the drawing of a sword, or the flight of a shooting star.
Like the drawing of a sword or the shooting of a star.

I delighted in it among youths—what youths they were!
I delighted in it among young men—what young men!

Mail-clad, they turn to the caller: 'I would ransom you with my father!'
