I yearned for drinking companions and wine,

and drinking from cups, small and large,

and a tavern cupbearer who comes to us in the morning,

wearing a girdle and short tunics.

Ah, by the languor of a Babylonian's eye—

wondrous in stature, with a curled temple-lock—

surely the eye's tears have betrayed my secret,

and my passion for him has burned me without fire.

And he blushes when he meets me, as though I

were dotting his cheek with pomegranate blossoms.

And a white-veiled wine, when beheld

by drinkers' eyes, wearing a yellow waist-wrap,

restive in water's reins, she leaps

when it tames her, as Mahri camels leap.

    لَها جَسَدانِ مِن خَزَفٍ وَقارِ

    I broke her seal to uncover the spirit of wine;

she has two bodies, of pottery and pitch.

A vineyard master received her for Kisra,

one counted among the great philosophers.

He set her trellises in soft earth,

and by streams like snakes gliding by night.

He lent her the trellises, and she loaded him

with clusters like the limbs of slave girls,

tender, never humbled by a foot's tread,

and pressing themselves before being pressed.

When laid in platters, they melted,

so they are carried only in jars.

Then he placed her, strained clear, in wine-jars,

and entrusted her to the daytime sun.

He dressed her in marked caps,

and kept her company with patience and waiting.

Then, when she had passed twenty years,

secluded and settled in her resting place,

from among the youths, a gracious man was granted her,

open-handed, no miser where wine is concerned.

Then he brought her forth, and she spoke of an age

like a mirage's shimmer in barren desert wastes.
