بُليتُI was afflicted بَعدَafter شَيبِهِhis graying
بُليتُ بَعدَ شَيبِهِ
بِضابِطٍwith a strong, firm man عَزيزِformidable
بِضابِطٍ عَزيزِ
I was afflicted, after his hair turned gray,
with a strong, formidable fellow.
وَخَدَّهُand his cheek مُشَوِّكٌthorny
وَخَدَّهُ مُشَوِّكٌ
مُزَرَّرُbutton-studded التَلويزِalmond-shaped patterning
مُزَرَّرُ التَلويزِ
And his cheek is thorny,
studded with almond-shaped knobs,
كَأَنَّهُas though it were فُرنِيَّةٌan oven-baked loaf
كَأَنَّهُ فُرنِيَّةٌ
كَثيرَةُabundant in الشونيزِblack cumin
كَثيرَةُ الشونيزِ
as though it were an oven-baked loaf
thick with black cumin.
لِلنَتفِof plucking فيهِon it أَثَرٌa mark
لِلنَتفِ فيهِ أَثَرٌ
كَأَثَرِlike the mark of التَخريزِawl-stitching
كَأَثَرِ التَخريزِ
Plucking has left a mark upon it,
like the mark of awl-stitching.
وَأَنفُهُand his nose كَسُترَةٍlike a parapet
وَأَنفُهُ كَسُترَةٍ
تُحشىis filled مِنَfrom الإِفريزِthe cornice
تُحشى مِنَ الإِفريزِ
And his nose is like a parapet,
filled in from the cornice.
تَحسَبُهُyou think him إِذاwhen بَداhe appears
تَحسَبُهُ إِذا بَدا
سَماجَةَthe ugliness of النَزيزِthe paltry wretch
سَماجَةَ النَزيزِ
You think him, when he appears,
the ugliness of a paltry wretch.
