رَأَيتُهُI saw him يَتَمَشّىhe strolls مُتعَباًweary ضَجِراًvexed
رَأَيتُهُ يَتَمَشّى مُتعَباً ضَجِراً
كَمِثلِlike غُصنِa bough نَقاًa sand dune فيin الرَوضِthe meadow أُملودِsupple
كَمِثلِ غُصنِ نَقاً في الرَوضِ أُملودِ
I saw him walking along, weary and vexed,
I saw him strolling, weary and vexed,
like a supple bough on a sandhill in the garden.
Like a supple bough on a sand dune in the meadow.
لَيتَwould that الغُبارَthe dust الَّذيthat يُؤذيهِtroubles him ليfor me كُحلٌkohl
لَيتَ الغُبارَ الَّذي يُؤذيهِ لي كُحلٌ
وَلَيتَنيand would that I جارُهُhis neighbor فيin زَحمَةِthe throng of العيدِthe festival
وَلَيتَني جارُهُ في زَحمَةِ العيدِ
If only the dust that troubles him were kohl for my eyes;
Would that the dust that troubles him were kohl for me,
and if only I were beside him in the Eid throng.
And would that I were beside him in the festival throng.
