إِذاif لَمnot أَجُدI give generously بِالمالِwith wealth جادَwill give generously بِهِwith it الدَهرُTime
عَلىto وارِثيmy heir وَالكَفُّand the hand فيin قَبرِهاits grave صِفرُempty
If I do not give freely of wealth, Time will give it away
If I am not generous with my wealth, Time will be generous with it
to my heir, while my hand lies empty in its grave.
to my heir, while my hand lies empty in its grave.
وَكَيفَand how أَخافُI fear الفَقرَpoverty وَاللَهُwhile God ضامِنٌa guarantor
لِرِزقيfor my sustenance وَهَلand is there فيin البُخلِmiserliness مِنfrom بَعدِafter ذاthis عُذرُan excuse
I used to fear poverty, though God guarantees
And how can I fear poverty, when God guarantees
my provision; after that, what excuse is there for miserliness?
my sustenance? And after this, is there any excuse for miserliness?
فَخَلّواso let يَديmy hand تُمطِرrain down بِوابِلِwith a downpour of جودِهاits generosity
عَلىupon الناسِthe people حَتّىuntil يَعجَبَmarvels الغَيثُthe rain وَالبَحرُand the sea
So let my hand rain down the torrent of its generosity
So let my hand rain down torrents of its generosity
upon the people, until rain and sea alike marvel.
upon the people, until the rain and the sea marvel.
