وَقَرنُ الشَمسِ لَم يَغِبِ
A safflower-hued wine—I halted beside it,
A yellow wine I have fermented
While the sun's rim had not yet set.
when the sun's horn had yet to set
وَقَدand already أَرِقَتhad grown sleepless لِفَقدِfor the loss of الكَرthe vine (word continues)
وَقَد أَرِقَت لِفَقدِ الكَر

مِ فيها أَعيُنُ العِنَبِ
And sleepless for the loss of the vine
The grapes' eyes were sleepless for want
Were the grapes' eyes within it.
of bubbles rising in the vat.

بِمُنهَلٍّ وَمُنسَكِبِ
And its valley's swelling flood surged,

With liquid pouring down and spilling forth.
through channel and overflow

Ruby juice playing with the pearl
Plays with the pearls of the bubbles.

فَياso, oh عَجَبيmy wonder لِعاصِرِهاat the one who pressed it
فَيا عَجَبي لِعاصِرِها
وَماand what يُغنيgood does it do بِهِat him عَجَبيmy wonder
وَما يُغني بِهِ عَجَبي
So how I marvel at the one who pressed it!
But wonder takes me for its own -
And what good is my wonder at him?
and my wonder serves no end.
