زَفَفناwe led forth إِلىto الشامِal-Sham رَجراجَةًa surging host
تَسُلُّdraws عَلىagainst مَنwhoever عَصىrebelled سَيفَa sword of باسِmight
We swept toward Syria, a vast, surging host,
We led a surging host to al-Sham,
unsheathing against whoever rebelled a sword of might.
Drawing a sword of might against whoever rebelled.
وَجالَتand wheeled about صَواهِلُناour neighing steeds المُقرَباتُthe well-tended ones
بِأَفعالِwith the deeds of جِنٍّjinn وَأَشباحِand the forms of ناسِpeople
Our favored steeds wheeled, neighing,
And our well-tended, neighing steeds wheeled about,
with the deeds of jinn and the forms of men.
With deeds of jinn and the forms of men.
وَظَلَّتand continued صَوارِمُkeen swords of أَيمانِناour right hands
تُحَسّيهِمُmake them sip المَوتَdeath فيin غَيرِother than كاسِa cup
And the sabers in our right hands kept
And the keen swords in our right hands kept
making them sip death from no cup.
Making them sip death without a cup.
تَموتُdie النُفوسُsouls بِآجالِهاat their appointed times
وَيَقطَعنَand they sever ماwhat بَينَbetween جِسمٍa body وَراسِand a head
Souls die at their appointed times,
Souls die at their appointed times,
and they sever what lies between body and head.
And the blades sever what lies between body and head.
