أَلاAh! حَبَّذاhow welcome الناعيthe bearer of death's news وَأَهلاًand welcome وَمَرحَباًand a warm welcome
أَلا حَبَّذا الناعي وَأَهلاً وَمَرحَباً
كَأَنَّكَas though you قَدhad بَشَّرتَنيyou brought me glad tidings بِغُلامِof a son
كَأَنَّكَ قَد بَشَّرتَني بِغُلامِ
Behold—how welcome the bearer of death-tidings! Welcome, and most welcome!
Ah, how welcome is the bearer of death's news—welcome and hail!
It is as though you had brought me glad tidings of a boy.
As though you had brought me glad tidings of a son.
وَكَمand how many دَولَةٍa reign لِلجَورِof tyranny مِنfrom قَبلِbefore هَذِهِthis one

مَضَت وَاِنقَضَت عَنّا بِغَيرِ سَلامِ
How many a dominion of tyranny, before this one,
And how many a reign of tyranny before this one
Has passed and ended, departing from us without farewell.
Has passed from us and come to an end without a farewell!
وَهَلand would يَحمِلُbear الضَيمَhumiliation الفَتىthe young man وَهوَwhile he آخِذٌis grasping
وَهَل يَحمِلُ الضَيمَ الفَتى وَهوَ آخِذٌ

بِقائِمِ سَيفٍ أَو عِنانِ لِجامِ
Can a valiant youth endure humiliation while grasping
And would a young man bear humiliation while grasping
A sword’s hilt—or the reins of a bridle?
A sword's hilt or a bridle's reins?
