Do you not see, my friend, what has befallen me

at the hands of a tyrant who oversteps bounds in his rule?

He says to the heart, when alone:

O heart, rise and seek, and do not sit idle.

How much wantonness there is in his speech,

and many a secret signal made with the hand,

and a glance swifter than suspicion,

that disappoints whoever asks or makes the first move.

O gathering-place of lovers, tell me when

you will be free of lowland and upland travelers?

O you, moon-bright amid black hair,

    and smiling amid dewy chrysanthemums,

If only you had shown me kindness once,

just once—or withdrawn your promise to me.
