ياO مَنone who بِهِin him صَمَمٌdeafness عَنِto الشَكوىcomplaint
يا مَن بِهِ صَمَمٌ عَنِ الشَكوى
وَتَغافُلٌand willful disregard عَنfor صاحِبِthe sufferer of البَلوىaffliction
وَتَغافُلٌ عَن صاحِبِ البَلوى
O you who are deaf to complaint,
O you whose name my tongue does not dare utter
And deliberately disregard the afflicted:
Oblivious are you to the plight of this lovelorn sufferer
إِنif بُحتَyou divulge بِاِسمِكَyour name فَهوَthen it يَقتُلُنيkills me
إِن بُحتَ بِاِسمِكَ فَهوَ يَقتُلُني
وَهُناكَand then تُثكَلُis bereaved مِنِّيَof me الثَكلىthe bereaved woman
وَهُناكَ تُثكَلُ مِنِّيَ الثَكلى
If you divulge your name, it will kill me,
If your name escapes my lips, it slays me
And then the bereaved woman will be bereft of me.
And here is burdened with grief over you forever
سافَرتُI journeyed بِالآمالِwith hopes فيكَin you فَلَمbut did not
سافَرتُ بِالآمالِ فيكَ فَلَم
تَبلُغreach وِصالَكَunion with you وَاِنثَنَتand turned back حَسرىexhausted
تَبلُغ وِصالَكَ وَاِنثَنَت حَسرى
I journeyed with hopes of you, but they did not
I traveled with hopes of attaining you in vain
Reach union with you, and turned back exhausted.
Yearning for your love though goals not attained
وَيحَalas for القُلوبِhearts مِنَbecause of العُيونِeyes لَقَدindeed
وَيحَ القُلوبِ مِنَ العُيونِ لَقَد
قامَتhas come قِيامَتُهُنَّtheir Judgment Day فيin الدُنياthis world
قامَت قِيامَتُهُنَّ في الدُنيا
Alas for hearts because of eyes! Indeed,
Alas the hearts through eyes have wept amain
Their Judgment Day has come in this world.
As if resurrected already while life remains
