أَصابَتstruck عَينَهاher eye عَينٌan evil eye فَزيدَتso it was given more
أَصابَت عَينَها عَينٌ فَزيدَت
فُتوراًlanguor فيin المِلاحَةِloveliness وَاِنكِساراand downcast softness
فُتوراً في المِلاحَةِ وَاِنكِسارا
An evil eye struck her eye, and it gained
Her eyes met other eyes, so they
Languor in its loveliness, and a downcast softness.
Grew dimmer in their perception and their light;
وَصارَand there came to be لِغَمزِهاfor her winking عَدَدٌa count إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle
وَصارَ لِغَمزِها عَدَدٌ إِذا ما
أَشارَsignaled إِلَيهِto it لَحظٌa glance أَوor أَشاراtwo signaled
أَشارَ إِلَيهِ لَحظٌ أَو أَشارا
And her winking came to have a count, whenever
And numberless, when signaled by a glance
A glance indicated it, or two did.
Or gesture, were the meanings of her plight.
