Sometimes I set out at dawn while night is in its retreat,

Like an Abyssinian who fled his companions.

And dawn has already bared its fangs,

As though laughing at night's departure.

And a nimble bird, lush in its youth,

For which every fine word of praise is meant,

With a talon firmly anchored at its root,

Never dry of its dye on the day of the hunt.

As though a snake's shed skin were among its garments.

The goshawk did not drive us away on its account,

Nor did we wish to have the goshawk in its stead.

As though the brocade in which it clothed itself

Were vowel marks on a sheet devoid of its writing.

It flew only for blood, which it paid in full.

A single one suffices when one calls for it.
