كَأَنَّas if البِركَةَthe pool الغَنّاءَlush لَمّاwhen
كَأَنَّ البِركَةَ الغَنّاءَ لَمّا
غَدَتbecame بِالماءِwith water مُفعَمَةًfilled to the brim تَموجُrippling
غَدَت بِالماءِ مُفعَمَةً تَموجُ
It was as if the lush pool, when
As if blessing itself when singing
it became brimful of water, rippling,
Rose with water abundantly surging
وَقَدand already لاحَappeared الدُجىthe darkness مَرآةَa mirror قَينٍa smith
وَقَد لاحَ الدُجى مَرآةَ قَينٍ
قَدalready اِنصَقَلَتbecame polished وَمَقبِضُهاand its handle الخَليجُthe canal
قَد اِنصَقَلَت وَمَقبِضُها الخَليجُ
and darkness had appeared, were a smith’s mirror,
And darkness appeared like a mirror of skill
already polished, with the canal as its handle.
That was burnished, its handle the gulf
