بِالقادِسيَّةِat al-Qadisiyya لَوif only يَدومُlasts
Ah, many a day has passed
O Lord of a day now past
At al-Qadisiyya—if only it could last!
In Al-Qadisiya, would that it might last
فيin ظِلِّthe shade of كَرمٍa vine لاnot يَطوroams (first part)
فُcompletes 'roams' بِهِaround it الهَجيرُthe noonday heat وَلاand not السُمومُthe scorching wind
In a vine's shade, where neither
In the shade of a vine that knows no blight
Noonday heat nor scorching wind roams.
Where neither exile nor poison might alight

And its sky is fresh foliage,
Its sky is the new leaf’s green
And its earth is dry, crumbling leaves.
Its earth the fallen leaf’s sheen

And a cupbearer urges me on with the cup;
A sickly glance from the wine-bearer’s eye
His eye has a languid gaze.
Tempts me with the cup raised high

I am drawn to his kiss, just as
As lured by his kiss like an orphan child
An orphan is drawn to a wet nurse.
Lured by the breast it has reviled

O you who reproach me for love,
O you who blame me for love
Leave me be, for this is an old affliction.
Leave me be, for my hurt is old enough
