My eyes are pledged to water your dwellings,

even if you do not know it.

And I said to my companions, “Look—has there come into view

the heart of a land that has hidden Umm Malik?”

It is as though the riding camels, when they set out at dawn,

left sandgrouse nesting hollows where they had knelt.

So no dismay if time brings trouble with its vicissitudes

and alters one's state; calamities are like that.

We have camels filling the open expanse, as though

they bore dark hills above their withers.

But when the age turns dust-gray, they return at evening

and meet it with veins that pour out blood.

Is any son of a free woman more formidable against enemies than I—

bold in enmity, upright in his ways?

I set up for them the market of combat with my sword,

and taught them to pierce kidneys with short spears.

Life is nothing but a span that will come to an end,

and wealth is only a perishable thing in a mortal's keeping.
