بَعيدٍfar مِنَfrom العُتبىreconciliation قَريبٍnear مِنَto الهَجرِabandonment
And one clear-sighted in treachery, quick to show aversion,
With foresight in betrayal, hasty in affection
far from reconciliation, close to abandonment.
Far from reproach, near to abandonment
لَهُfor him شافِعٌan intercessor فيin القَلبِthe heart مِنfor كُلِّevery زَلَّةٍlapse
فَلَيسَso he is not بِمُحتاجِin need الذُنوبِsins إِلىof العُذرِan excuse
He has an intercessor in my heart for every lapse,
He has an intercessor in the heart for every stumble
so his sins need no excuse.
So he has no need for sins to have an excuse
تُجاذِبُنيpull me to and fro الأَطرافُthe glances بِالوَصلِwith union وَالقِلىand aversion
فَتَختَصِمُso contend الآمالُhopes وَاليَأسُand despair فيin الصَدرِthe breast
Glances pull me to and fro with union and aversion,
The eyes flirt with me with union and affection
so hopes and despair contend in my breast.
So hopes and despair dispute in the chest

خَفيٌّhidden عَلىfrom العَوادِvisitors to the sick باقٍlasting عَلىthrough الدَهرِall time
In my soul is an illness whose sufferer cannot be cured,
With myself is an illness not cured for its sick one
hidden from sickbed visitors, lasting for all time.
Hidden from visitors, lasting for lifetimes
هَوىًa passion باطِنٌhidden فَوقَbeyond الهَوىpassion لَجَّhas persisted داؤُهُits malady

وَأَعياand proved too much عَلىfor العُذّالِthe reproachers فيin السِرِّsecret وَالجَهرِand openly
A hidden passion beyond passion, whose malady persists,
A love deep inside, above love, its disease is severe
and proves too much for the reproachers, in secret and openly.
And failed the healers, in secret and openly
بُليتُI was afflicted بِجَبّارٍwith a tyrant يُجَلُّis exalted عَنِbeyond المُنىwishes
عَلىupon رَأسِهِhis head تاجٌa crown مِنَof التَيهِhaughtiness وَالكِبرِand pride
I have been afflicted with a tyrant beyond the reach of wishes,
I'm afflicted with a tyrant who bars wishes
upon his head a crown of haughtiness and pride.
On his head a crown of confusion and arrogance

Able to do whatever he wishes with me, holding sway,
Able over what he willed of me, empowered
bold in wronging me, a ruler over my affairs.
Running my injustice, a commander over my command

I grew accustomed to love until my soul hated hatred,
I'm accustomed to passion until my soul wearied of affection
and wasting illness lingered until I grew patient with patience itself.
And longing grew until I was patient with patience

And a wine of Karkh lineage, or Babylonian,
Like an obstinate she-camel or a Babylonian woman
lay for ages in the darkness of pitch, unmoving.
Who settled in the darkness of the camp, not walking

And many a night of revelry had its length shortened
And how many nights of play whose length
by a cupbearer serving with both hands, the eye upon the wine.
Was shortened by the palm-cup and the eye for wine
وَإِنّيand indeed I وَإِنand though كانَwas التَصابيyouthful dalliance يَحُثُّنيurges me on

And I, though youthful dalliance urges me on,
And if urges hasten me
do attain my desires and act within my bounds.
To attain my needs and act according to my fate

A noble sinner: if he gains some pleasure,
Noble in sins, if he attains some pleasure
he forgoes part of it, keeping above gossip and sin.
He leaves some above conversations and burden
