Time has troubled me and struck,

    withdrawn and gone too far—

not as you once saw me,

    cheerful and content.

And I may indeed be content, yet nothing

displeases me like my gray hair.

Time has made sprout for us

    all things to excess.

    And indeed I gallop on

a full-grown horse, broad of stride,

    بِبَياضٍ قُمِطا

    approaching in a black coat,

    swathed in white;

looking from within a forehead blaze,

    which he bordered and marked.

    لٍ إِذا ما رُبِطا

    Ablaze with vigor, ever roam-

    ing whenever he is tethered;

and when he moves, he flings

the hobbles away with his forelegs.

Like a gazelle that cannot reach

a branch-tip, and so stretches upward.

    And his jaws seem

to be opening a wicker box.

Then we trod a remote tract,

grown lovely and flecked with gray.

    Unfurled there by the rain-

showers of spring was a patterned carpet.

    And they gathered its embroidery,

and divided it among themselves in plots.

    So its blossoms seemed

like scattered gray hairs streaking it.

    The forenoon stirred within it

    a clamor among the birds.

    Its wild game was safe,

    whether it climbed or descended,

    leaving behind, with its foot,

every tract of earth it had trodden.

O you who trifle with me,

    recklessly and mistakenly,

    can a hawk be frightened

by the loss of sandgrouse chicks?

    What does a hunter care

    which wild ass has farted?

    A night raincloud roused

    a speckled male viper,

    savage and predatory,

    and it fell upon me.
