Cure your cares with yellow wine,

And blend water’s light with the fire of wine.

Its long aging has beguiled you with nothing of it

In the wine jar but a yellow remnant.

Time has kept polishing it with its recurring cycles,

And increasing its delicacy and clarity,

Until, when nothing remained but its light

In the wine jar, and it had withdrawn from the impurities,

And blazed in a night made of its pitch,

Like the blazing of Mars in the darkness,

It flowed down like an ingot that had been cast,

Or a snake that leapt from the sun-scorched ground.

And exchanged a sealed lump of clay

For an apple at the top of every vessel.

Do not mention me at the morning draught; pass me

A cup of aged wine every evening.

Many a night, sleep distracted its reprover

From two lovers who had arranged to meet.

They locked themselves in an embrace throughout their night together,

    Having pressed bosom against bosom,

Until, when dawn broke, they parted

    With sighs, regret, and weeping.

Nothing alarmed us beneath the darkness except

The stars’ resemblance to the eyes of watchers.
