My eyes are pledged to water your dwellings,

even if you do not know it.

And I said to my companions: Look—has there appeared to you

the heart of the lands that have hidden Umm Malik?

It is as though the riding camels, when they depart before dawn,

left sandgrouse nesting hollows in their kneeling places.

So no anguish if time brings unease with its reversals,

and changes one's lot—for such are calamities.

We have camels filling the open expanse, as though

they carried dark hills above their withers.

Yet when time grows dust-gray, they return at evening,

and come against it with veins that spill blood.

Is any son of a free woman more formidable against enemies than I,

bold in the face of enmity, upright in his ways?

I set up for them a market of sword-combat with my blade,

and taught them thrusts to the kidneys with short spears.

And life is only a span that will come to an end,

and wealth is but a perishing thing in the keeping of one who perishes.
