وَقَفتُI stood بِالرَوضِin the garden أَبكيI weep فَقدَthe loss of مُشبِهِهِthe one resembling it
حَتّىuntil بَكَتwept بِعُيونيwith my eyes أَعيُنُeyes الزَهرِthe flowers
I stood in the garden, weeping for the loss of the one who resembled it,
I stood weeping in the garden for the loss of its like,
Until the flowers' eyes wept with my own.
Until my eyes made the flowers weep with my eyes.
لَوif لَمnot تُعِرهاlend them جُفونيmy eyelids الدَمعَthe tears تَسفَحُهُshed them
لِرَحمَتيout of pity for me لَاِستَعارَتهُwould have borrowed them مِنَfrom المَطَرِthe rain
Had my eyelids not lent them tears to shed
If my eyelids had not lent it my tears that poured down,
In pity for me, they would have borrowed them from the rain.
My compassion would have borrowed rain from the clouds for it.
فَمَنso who لِباكِيَةِfor a weeping one الأَجفانِthe eyelids سائِلَةٍstreaming
ظَلَّتshe continued بِلاwithout فِكَرٍthoughts تَبكيweeping بِلاwithout فِكَرِthoughts
Who, then, is there for her whose weeping eyelids stream,
So who will question the weeping eyelids
She who went on, without thought, weeping without thought?
That remained ceaselessly weeping without thought?
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen اللَيلُthe night أَرخىlet fall سِترَthe veil of ظُلمَتِهِits darkness
وَساعَدَand helped اَجفانَهاher eyelids جَفنيmy eyelid عَلىin السَهَرِkeeping vigil
Until, when night let fall the veil of its darkness,
Until when the night let down the veil of its darkness,
And my eyelid helped her eyelids keep vigil:
And my eyelids helped its eyelids to stay awake.

Do not scorn, O daughter of the clans, a noble man,
Do not think little, O daughter of noble people,
Even if his two garments are threadbare and he is hard to look upon.
If his clothes are worn and unpleasing to the eye.
إِنif تَبلَwears out جِدَّةُthe newness of ثَوبَيهِhis two garments فَبَينَهُماthen between them both

If the newness of his two garments wears away, between them lies
When the patches on his clothes are many, between them
A sword that severs heads from necks.
Is a sword that distinguishes between mansion and hut.
