فَإِنso if تَسأَلانيyou two ask me فيمَfor what حُزنيmy sorrow فَإِنَّهُthen it is
فَإِن تَسأَلاني فيمَ حُزني فَإِنَّهُ
لِشَخصٍfor a person ثَوىlay buried بَينَamong القُبورِthe graves فَقَيِّدِdeparted
لِشَخصٍ ثَوى بَينَ القُبورِ فَقَيِّدِ
So if you two ask me what my sorrow is for, it is
If you ask me why I grieve, it is for one
for someone departed, who lies among the graves.
Who lies buried among the tombs, in chains,
وَماand not كُنتُI was أَخشىI fear أَنthat تُحَوِّلَwould turn نَظرَتيmy gaze
وَما كُنتُ أَخشى أَن تُحَوِّلَ نَظرَتي
إِلىto شامِتٍone who gloats مِنfrom غابِطٍan admiring envier وَحَسودِand a spiteful envier
إِلى شامِتٍ مِن غابِطٍ وَحَسودِ
And I never feared that my gaze would turn
And I had feared lest your gaze would turn
from an admirer and an envier to one who gloats.
To a gloating rival or envious foe.
