    I complain to God that my tears have run dry,

    and that I am dying of grief from loving you,

    فَلَستُ أَرقُدُ فيهِ مِثلَ مَن رَقَدا

    and that my eye is kept sleepless at night;

    so I do not sleep that night as others do.

    They said, “Parting is tomorrow, without doubt.” I told them:

    “Rather, my soul will die tomorrow, before the parting.”

    I must indeed be very patient, then, if I live on after

    they have announced departure—even if they never depart.
