ياO عاذِليmy reproacher فيin لَيلِهِhis night وَنَهارِهِand his day
خَلِّlet الهَوىpassion يَكويsear المُحِبَّthe lover بِنارِهِwith its fire
O you who reproach me, night and day,
O my reproacher, night and day
Let passion sear the lover with its fire.
Let passion burn, it tortures the lover with its fire
وَيحَalas for المُتَيَّمِthe love-stricken man وَيحَهُalas for him ماذاwhat عَلىupon
عُذّالِهِhis reproachers مِنfrom ذَنبِهِhis sin أَوor عارِهhis shame
Alas for the love-stricken, alas for him! What burden falls upon
Alas for the blameless one, what is his sin
His reproachers from his sin or his shame?
Or shame, that he should be so reproached?
ياO حُسنَthe beauty of أَحمَدَAhmad إِذwhen غَداwent forth مُتَشَمِّراًwith sleeves rolled up
فيin قُرطَقٍa short tunic يَمشيhe walks بِكَأسِwith a cup of عُقارِهhis wine
Oh, the beauty of Ahmad when he went forth, sleeves rolled up,
O beautiful Ahmad, walking jauntily
In a short tunic, walking with a cup of his wine!
In a short coat, cup of wine in hand
وَالغُصنُand the bough فيin أَثوابِهِhis clothes وَالدُرُّand the pearls فيin
فَمِهِhis mouth وَجيدُand the neck of الظَبيِthe gazelle فيamid أَزرارِهhis buttons
And a bough is in his clothes, and pearls are in
Branch tucked in his clothes, pearl in his mouth
His mouth, and a gazelle's neck amid his buttons.
And gazelle necklace round his breast
لَكِنَّهُbut he قاسٍhard-hearted كَذوبٌdeceitful وَعدُهُhis promise
نائيdistant المَزارِto visit عَلىdespite دُنوِّthe nearness of جِوارِهhis dwelling
But he is hard-hearted, his promise false,
Yet he is cruel, his promise false
Far out of reach, though his dwelling is near.
Though his dwelling is near, he is far off
ماhow كانَwould have been أَحذَقَنيadept I am بِهُجرَةِat forsaking مِثلِهِone like him
لَولاwere it not for مَلاحَةُthe beauty of خَدِّهِhis cheek وَعِذارِهand his sideburns
How adept I would have been at forsaking one like him,
None has wounded me by leaving like him
Were it not for the beauty of his cheek and his sideburns.
But for his cheek’s softness and coquetry
