Whoever challenges the lions in their forests falls
He who contends with lions in their dens, takes a risk
Into a plight that will not yield, even if you resist it.
If they repel him, he will be driven back in distress

And whoever throws small stones above himself in reckless pride
And he who casts stones at lofty mansions
Comes to his senses when one that returns gashes his head.
Will be injured if but one small pebble strikes him in return

Take care: flight will not save you every day.
Gently, not every day misfortune comes from running away
How many fugitives have been cut off short of their refuge!
How many have fled to safety and not returned

Do not eagerly summon evil to yourself;
Invite not evil to you, though it come in festive guise
For evil is the quickest of those summoned to answer a call.
Evil is quick to answer when 'tis called and summoned

Let not Ahmad's house be destroyed through neglect
Where many fools have already fallen.

His forgiving you ensures not loss by haste
For a man's power drives panic away from him.
A man's ability protects him from panic

You have burdened yourself beyond your means through ignorance
And whoever wrestles a strong man while weak is thrown.
One who contends feebly with the mighty will be overthrown

Whom the fates lead to death, and who follows.

Hearts grow blind when destiny arrives, so neither
Does the one with eyes see, nor does the one with hearing hear.
Keen-sighted nor keen-hearing remain aware

A man harvests nothing but what he has sown.
A man reaps only what he sows, not what he hopes to gain

Already covering rugged ground and plains alike with his army.
Grief has enveloped the army and the plains together

When your complexion changes and turns pale.
When your face changes color and grows dim

Saying: would that I had done good works before
[Unclear opening word]—the offender is requited for what he has done.
Punishment awaits the guilty man for what he has wrought

Grip with both hands a rope from him, seeking protection;
Grasp firmly the rope from Him, hold fast
You will find it bound by generosity, never severed.
You will find Him generous, never withdrawn

He requites and pardons, neither from hatred nor affection;

Rather, he strives as one who strives for the Muslims' welfare.
Rather, he who works for the welfare of Muslims strives aright

Only when asked for aid is he inclined to deceive
For a generous man, when you deceive him, lets himself be deceived.

Wonders he established and originated in generosity.

The earth is cramped by calamity—grows a cubit and expands.

It is not patience that dwells in him, but a resolve too lofty
That disdains to be shaken however dire the distress
To be affected by an offense, however heinous.

And an offense committed by a base man is too petty
Rather than borne by a noble man in dignity
For a noble man to make much or little of it.

Scattered among mankind has gathered in your person.

The silent one - who else suffers time's distress?
One who stills the complaints of whoever bemoans the pain of his days.

Whoever does not have his support in Ibn Isma'il,
Would be torn nights between them piece by piece
The nights divide him among themselves, piece by piece.

Indeed, I love you, knowing what is unique
Perfection of your nature, wherein all virtues rest
To your graces, and what has gathered within them.

So I do not go to excess when welcomed, making things up,
Nor neglectful in aloofness, regressing to blame
Nor do I despair when turned away, letting myself be deterred.

That renews my eager expectation of him every day.
