ولوجدِand for the anguish قلبof a heart ماnot انقضىhas ended ولهيبهand its blaze
Who will heed my fugitive’s tears and their pouring [reading uncertain],
O you whose tears flowed and sobbed
and a heart’s unending anguish and its blaze?
And whose heart has not diminished or extinguished its flame
ومتيمٍand a love-stricken man قدalready هذبتُهrefined him (vocalization uncertain) يدُthe hand النوىof separation
بصحيحwith genuine وجدٍpassion غيرother than ماwhat يهذيبهhe raves about (joined form)
And a love-stricken man whom the hand of separation has refined
And who became enamored but his love was betrayed
with genuine passion, not something he merely raves about.
So it no longer follows its former ways or experiments
خانتهbetrayed him مهجتهhis soul فماso it does not تمشيproceed علىaccording to

His soul betrayed him, and no longer follows
His determination to abandon love has weakened
his former habits or his experience.
So he obeyed it, disobeying leaving it
همhe resolved علىon تركِabandoning الهوىpassion ركبتهshe overpowered him
فاطاعهاso he obeyed her وعصىand rebelled علىagainst تركيبهhis constitution
He resolved to leave passion; she overpowered him,
Passion forcibly took hold of him
so he obeyed her, rebelling against his own nature.
By force, though he's not equal to it or accustomed to it
وحشىa wild creature تعشقهbecame enamored of him الغرامpassion وحلهand inhabited him
قسراby force وليسand it is not بكفوهhis equal وضريبهand his peer
A wild creature whom passion adored and inhabited
O heart, you were unfaithful though you should have been loyal
by force, though it was neither his equal nor his peer.
Your actions were not proper or decent
ياO قلبُheart خنتyou betrayed وأنتwhile you منone from whom يجباis exacted (uncertain form) الوفاloyalty
ماnot مثلthe like of فعلكyour deed صالحfitting بنجيبهfor his noble one
O heart, you betrayed, though loyalty is expected of you;
You didn't honor your guest, the longing, by meeting
a deed like yours does not befit a noble soul.
Or keep ties with him forever or draw him near
ماnot كنتَwere you تكرمَhonoring ضيفَthe guest شوقِof longing بِاللقاwith meeting

You never honored longing’s guest with a meeting,
O Hind, you have ignited the evil of disdain
or union with him, ever, nor by drawing him near.
In my heart, never to be extinguished, so strange
ياO هندُHind قدalready اضرمتِyou kindled منthrough نكرthe horror of الجفاestrangement
فيin القلبthe heart ماwhat لاينطفيdoes not go out وغريبهand its strangeness
O Hind, through the horror of estrangement you have kindled
Since I recognized his love, ask about
in the heart what cannot be quenched, with all its strangeness.
The state of the one seized by disdain and stripped away

I am the one whose passion you knew; inquire
A youth counseled sincerely but he
about the plight of estrangement’s captive and the one it has despoiled.
Corrupted what he presented, faulty and blamable

كمشوبlike an adulterated thing ماwhat أهداهhe gave it ليto me ومعيبهand its flaw
The reproacher adulterated his counsel; [the closing phrase is unclear],
My melting soul, if you submit
like the tainted thing he gave me, and its flaw.
To one who causes this, say who melted it
لنفسfor a soul ذيبيmy wolf إِهلكتI was destroyed (uncertain vocalization) فانso if تسلَyou ask

For my wolf’s soul I was destroyed [wording uncertain]; if you ask
O soul, you have over lamented so show
by whom this befell him, say, ‘By his wolf.’
Patience over the delusions of passion and its nearness
ياO نفسsoul أكثرتyou have overdone التأسفlamentation فاعمليso practice

O soul, you have lamented too much; practice
For fate has brought joy with Ahmed
patience in renouncing feeble passion and its kin.
In his full moon I feel safe and sheltered
فالدهرfor time قدalready جلبhas brought السرورjoy بأحمدٍthrough Ahmad
فبدرههso by his full moon (uncertain form) أناI آمنsafe وجليبهand his captive
For time has brought joy through Ahmad,
The victorious king who seized the heights
so by his full moon I am safe—and his captive [reading uncertain].
And glory - all pride is in his plunder
الناصرَal-Nasir الملكthe king الذيwho انتهبseized العلىthe heights
والمجدُand glory كلall الفخرِhonor فيin منهوبهhis spoils
Al-Nasir, the king who seized the heights
A king filling the world's expanse, exalted, and whenever he saw
and glory: all honor lies in his spoils.
The least arrogance he called "Exalted am I with Him!"
ملكُa king ملاfilled الدنياthe world علاwith loftiness ومتىand whenever رأىhe saw
أدنىthe least السناradiance نادىhe called to العلىthe heights ملىfill (uncertain form) بهِwith it
A king who filled the world with loftiness; whenever he saw
O my state, protect the lands and listen
the faintest radiance, he called to the heights, ‘Be filled with it!’ [reading uncertain]
So attack on a day of ignorance and ambiguity
ياO خليهunclear form of address روعىterrify البلادthe lands واسمعيand make them hear
فتكاslaughter بيومon a day جهولهits foolish one وأريبهand its discerning one
O [unclear addressee], terrify the lands and make them hear
Rather, divide his enemies between the slain
of slaughter on a day for its foolish and its discerning.
And the captive, so he may be sated and fight
بلrather قسميdivide أعداهhis enemies بينamong قتيلهhis slain
وأسيرهand his captive كيso that يشتفىhe may find satisfaction وحريبهand his despoiled foe
Rather, divide his enemies among his slain
His decree is the truth of the Most High, gladdening me
and his captives and despoiled foes, so he may find satisfaction.
So I am amazed at a truth that is fulfilled and soothing
فقضاؤهso his fulfillment حقthe due العلىof greatness ليto me مطربdelightful
فاعجبso marvel لحقat a debt ينقضيis discharged وطريبهand the one delighted by it
His paying greatness its due is a delight to me;
Preserving promises - none like him
so marvel at a debt discharged, and at the one it delights.
Who would break them - the son of Husaybah and his kindred

فأضاعهاthen squandered them ابنthe son حسيبهof his nobleman ونسيبهand his kinsman
He kept covenants such as I had never known before,
O deputy of the Merciful, how much
then the son of his noble kinsman squandered them.
Grace has come to me from You, beyond what I intended
ياO نائبdeputy الرحمنof the All-Merciful كمhow many منof نعمةٍa blessing
وافتكreached you منهfrom Him غيرother than ماwhat تنوىyou intend بهthrough Him

O deputy of the All-Merciful, how many blessings
The udder of Your right hand still overflows
have reached you from Him beyond what you intended!
To nourish me since I grew up as a youth
ماnot زالhas ceased ضرعthe udder يديْof my hand يمينكyour right hand حافلاbrimming
لغذيّfor the nursling جودكof your bounty مذsince نشاhe grew وربيبهand its foster-child
Your right hand, the udder feeding mine, has ever brimmed
How often when thirsty have I said at the spring of another
for your bounty’s nursling since he grew, and its foster-child.
"O my innermost being, do not increase doubts!"
كمhow often قلتَyou said عطشاناًthirsty بموردat a watering-place غيرهof another
ياO مهجتيmy soul لاdo not تكثريincrease مريبهhis misgivings (uncertain form)
How often you said, thirsty at another’s watering-place:
And when the dew called through it "Kill poverty
‘O my soul, do not increase his misgivings.’
For the uniquely generous one of your time," I said "Make me melt!"
وإذاand when الندىbounty نادىcalled بهthrough him اقتلslay فاقةpoverty

لوحيدto the peerless one عصركof your age قالhe said قلsay أذويبهِI wither through it (uncertain joined form)
And when bounty called through him, ‘Slay poverty!’
So I will praise Him and light a blaze
to the peerless man of your age, he said, ‘Say: I wither through it’ [reading uncertain].
That will burn as long as Your drops are contented with me

لازالmay it never cease قطركyour rain يرتضىis content فهميmy understanding بهwith it
So I shall praise him and fill what is scorched;
And trill loudly the voice of the bulbul, wandering
may your rain ever satisfy my understanding.
And the raven croaking with grief for its companion

And listen to the nightingale’s voice, for it has spread fragrance,
Give him the good news of a feast day in which you count triumphs
and pelt the crow, silencing its cawing.
For you is a state in which glory revolves or intoxicates

And enjoy a feast in which the heights prepare
for you a state of enfolding glory or infusing it [wording uncertain].
