When companions turn away from a companion out of envy,
When my friends turn envious and abandon me,
neither incantation nor reproach can help him with them.
No charm can help me, and no reproach avails.

Enmities vanish, and thoughts grow pure,
Enmities may cease and hearts find peace again,
but an envious man's heart never grows pure toward you.
But never an envier's heart towards you prevails.

Though they have struggled against the self and desire,
Though they have struggled with their soul's desire,
yet victory over them belonged to their selves.
Their souls have overcome them and prevailed.

They would wish—were it not for selves that overcame them—
They wish - had not their souls ruled over them -
for harmony with me, that through it the Lord might be pleased with them.
To please and satisfy the Lord of all.

Their souls' self-interest makes them boil; just as
Their souls' caprice makes them boil while with me,
you see them with me, suddenly they are against me, allied in hostility.
Though seeing them, you'd think 'gainst me they're mailed.

People of merit have always, from Adam's time
Men of merit have, since Adam's line began,
to this day of ours, spent their days in war.
Faced war unending till the present day.

In the morning I send them a dove flying in affection,
To them I send a morning dove of love,
while they are scorpions that have crept toward me in the darkness.
While in the dark they have attacked like creeping snakes.

Our loved ones, be gentle with one who has
Gently, friends, to him whose only arms
for you, in return for harshness, only affection and love.
Are malice and hatred, show love and care.

Come, recall what I have done; I have no
But I have only what my God decreed,
fault toward you except what God has clothed me in.
No other trespass against you to declare.

Nor does the young man al-Khayyat harbor hatred for his king,
No hatred has the tailor for his king -
that I should wrong him; rather, love of Yahya is his wont.
Does clothier chide monarch that raised him high?

injustice, or through which my affliction grows greater.
Slandering and libeling me with his lies.

pardon a young man's stumble in which his foot slipped—
Reproach not the foot that stumbles in your path -
an enemy of your enemies, a partisan of your party.
He is still of your party and side allied.

No, by God! He is not tempted by the love
whom he held in esteem on my account, nor passionately attached to them.
Of those who have weighed and measured me aside.

Oaths do I swear, each binding on the next,
with others, to rid my statement of taint,
To refute his claim and cast his lies aside:

بأن الفتى الخياط ليس إلى امرئ

عليك من الأعدا يميل له جنبُ
that the young man al-Khayyat inclines toward no man
The tailor seeks no man above you to befriend,
among the enemies opposed to you.
Nor leans his heart towards any at your side.

His only aim is to oppose me; he would persist even if
His only goal was to oppose me, though,
the prophets and scriptures opposed him concerning me.
Prophets and Books condemn his turn aside.

He saw among them a statement agreeing with his opinion,
He picked sayings that fit his wished-for view,
and its censure and defamation of me pleased him.
Praising these, enjoying blame for me supplied.

So he praised it, though desire had deafened him
Blinded by passion, deaf to ruin and loss ahead,
and blinded him to what ends in loss and ruin,
His eager hearing lost to truth so dignified.

and to the ways they had violated our Lord's judgment
Ignoring where we're instructed by our Lord
and the judgment of God's Messenger—and the ascent is hard.
And by the path the Prophet glorified.

Whatever has befallen me for God's sake is dear to me,
My love in God is for all good they've done;
and their slander and abuse will not count against me.
Their slander and libel by me are decried.

My pages, with the good deeds they give me as gifts,
Pages for them I fill with their merits fair,
are full: theirs are the deeds, mine the records.
Their deeds the books, while mine the pen applied.

So the young man al-Khayyat has no offense against you,
So the tailor has no fault towards you now,
nor is he guilty for what he has given me as a gift.
Nor wrong in what he proffered me beside.

I have forgiven him—God knows—willingly
By God, I've pardoned fully his trespasses,
all his sins that affected me, and those alone.
All that against me he has testified.

But those between God and him—
As for what's between the Lord and him alone -
the Lord has become, in his case, both adversary and judge.
That case the Judge Eternal will decide.

God has vast pardon for His servants,
God has vast clemency for all His slaves,
and forgiveness of slips, through which the difficult becomes easy.
Forgiving errors, might He be defied.

In you is restraint when one with power strikes,
You have forbearance when you've power to crush,
and forbearance and pardon that anger does not precede.
Clemency and pardon overriding pride.

You are he whose heart is of God's mercy,
You are he whose heart God has made merciful,
when the heart of one with might is of wrath.
When from wrath your strength cannot be denied.

I have come to you seeking intercession for his release,
To intercede I come, in essence pleading
by the bounty of your favors, beneath which the clouds lie.
For grace from your hands that the clouds do hide.

Intercede for him - accept my interceding!
and my effort—how many a servant's intercession the Lord accepts!
How many a slave by his Lord is deified!

Take him by both hands yourself, and send him back unharmed,
Take his hand - you and those behind restore him,
to those behind him, with neither punishment nor reproach.
Safe, unreproached, unchided to your side.
