منه وأقبل بعد ما قد أعرضا
The beloved grew tender, and I glimpsed a lightning-flash of favor
The beloved's kindness and the gleam of his pleasure
From him; and he turned toward me after having turned away.
After he had turned away from me
فأعادso he restored فييwithin me الروحthe spirit بعدafter ذهابهاits departure
فأعاد فيي الروح بعد ذهابها
وجلاand he dispelled هموماcares ضاقgrew narrow بيfor me منهاbecause of them الفضاthe open expanse
وجلا هموما ضاق بي منها الفضا
So he restored the spirit within me after its departure,
Restored my soul after it had departed
And dispelled cares that had made the vast expanse too narrow for me.
And cleared away sorrows that had filled my heart
ياO عطفةtenderness الخلthe intimate friend الحبيبthe beloved تعاهديkeep watch over
يا عطفة الخل الحبيب تعاهدي
قلبيmy heart العميدlovesick فقدfor indeed وهاgrew weak وتقوضاand crumbled
قلبي العميد فقد وها وتقوضا
O tenderness of my beloved friend, keep watch over
O kindnesses of the beloved, tend to
My lovesick heart, for it has weakened and crumbled.
My weary heart, for it has melted and crumbled
ياO غافلينheedless ones جنواthey reaped رضاهhis favor وماand did not درواthey knew
يا غافلين جنوا رضاه وما دروا
مقدارthe worth ماwhat يجنونthey reap منfrom ذاكthat الرضاfavor
مقدار ما يجنون من ذاك الرضا
O heedless ones, you reaped his favor without knowing
O heedless ones, reap his pleasure but know not
The worth of what you reap from that favor.
The worth of what you reap from that pleasure
أناI منكمthan you أدرىknow better فليسfor there is no لصحةfor health
أنا منكم أدرى فليس لصحة
فيin الجسمthe body قدراworth عندin the eyes of منone who لمhas not يمرضاbeen ill
في الجسم قدرا عند من لم يمرضا
I know better than you, for health has no
I know better than you, for good health
Worth to one whose body has never been ill.
Has no value for one who's not been ill
ماhow احسنbeautiful الاقبالthe turning toward منfrom بعدafter الجفاestrangement
ما احسن الاقبال من بعد الجفا
والذand sweeter منthan عودthe return السرورjoy وقدand it had already مضاpassed
والذ من عود السرور وقد مضا
How lovely is his turning toward me after estrangement!
How lovely is affection after aloofness
And what is sweeter than joy's return after it has gone?
And the sweetness of joy after it passes
انظرإلىlook at بازa hawk تنتفhas been plucked ريشهits plumage
انظرإلى باز تنتف ريشه
رامsought النهوضto rise فلمbut did not يطقhave the strength أنto ينهضاrise
رام النهوض فلم يطق أن ينهضا
Look at a hawk whose feathers have been plucked:
Look at the falcon plucking its feathers
It tried to rise, but lacked the strength to do so.
Longing to soar, but too weak to take flight
عاداتكمyour customs أنthat تجبرواyou mend ماwhat تكسرواyou break
عاداتكم أن تجبروا ما تكسروا
فاجبرso mend كسيراًa broken one هاضهshattered him صرفthe turns القضاof fate
فاجبر كسيراً هاضه صرف القضا
It is your custom to mend what you break;
Your custom is to mend what you break
So mend a broken one whom the turns of fate have shattered.
So mend the broken one whose fate is spent
وأذقهand let him taste طعمthe taste رضاكyour favor تحيىmay live نفسهhis soul
وأذقه طعم رضاك تحيى نفسه
بينamong النفوسsouls ودعهand leave him سيفاa sword ينتضاto be unsheathed
بين النفوس ودعه سيفا ينتضا
And give him a taste of your favor, so his soul may live
Let him taste your pleasure, reviving his soul
Among souls; let him be a sword to be unsheathed.
Among souls, no longer a sword drawn for war
قدمhas arrived الرضاfavor أهلاwelcome بهto it أهلاwelcome بهto it
قدم الرضا أهلا به أهلا به
ومضىand has passed زمانthe time السخطof displeasure عناaway from us وانقضاand ended
ومضى زمان السخط عنا وانقضا
Favor has arrived—welcome to it, welcome to it!
Offer your pleasure in welcome, welcome!
And the time of displeasure has passed from us and ended.
The time of anger at us has passed and gone
