كالشمسِ قابضةً حميا الكاسِ
She walked with a slender, gracefully swaying figure,
With a supple, slender figure she sways
Like the sun, holding the cup's fiery wine.
Like the sun, cupbearer of the goblet

تصمي القلوب بطرفها النّعاسِ
A lovely maiden—when the breeze toys with her figure,
When the breeze plays with her braids
She strikes hearts dead with her drowsy gaze.
She captivates hearts with her sleepy eyes

Her cheeks are a houri's; the light of her brow
The beauty of the gardens, the light of her brow
Dispenses with the lamp and the measuring gauge.
Makes lamp and wick unnecessary

طيبُ الكرى وتجود بعد شِماسِ
She shuns her lover, while, for love of her,
She is cold to her lover though he loves her
Sweet sleep has deserted him; she grants favor after defiance.
The fragrance of musk still generous after neglect

And she shows you affection, then shies away at times,
She gives you intimacy then spurns you at times
And so behaves the gazelle of every covert.
Like the roebuck, coy with every flirt

Until from pining for her, those who saw me
My form—and how much hardship a lover endures!
Could not recognize me - how the lover suffers!

So if I'm taken by time through love of her
And gone far from my homeland and most of my people,
And distance myself from my country and people
