ودعand let كيفhow ماever شاءتwilled مقاديرهHis decrees تجريrun their course
School your soul in surrender to God in every matter;
Submit yourself to Allah's will in this matter
And let His decrees run however they will.
And let His decrees take their course as He desires
واجملand seek moderately فليسfor it is not السعىstriving إلاexcept تطلباseeking
لماof what لمnot يزلcease يأتيكcomes to you منfrom حيثwhere لاnot تدريyou know
And seek moderately, for striving is only a pursuit
Be patient, for striving is but seeking
Of what keeps coming to you from where you do not know.
What is destined to come to you from where you know not

وماand there is no بعدafter هذاthis العسرhardship شيءanything سوىexcept اليسرease
For after bitter hardship comes only its relief;
After every narrowness comes relief
And after this hardship there is nothing but ease.
And after hardship comes ease

وهذاand this هوis المعهودthe familiar way منof خلقthe nature الدهرof time
And every condition changes for those who live through it;
Every state changes for its people
This is the familiar nature of time.
As this is the norm of fate's creation

If the Lord is pleased with you, then easy is
When the Master is pleased with you
All that you encounter, whether good or evil.
Then both good and evil are benign

And ask your good intention alone about His pleasure;
Ask only for His approval in your intentions
Do not be misled by benefit or harm from Him.
Be not fooled by benefit or harm from Him

For many a lover drinks bitterness as an ordeal,
How many a lover drinks bitter infatuation
And many a bearer of hatred finds fierce scheming sweet.
While the hated one finds bitterness sweet

So do good: if your foot slips, you will find a support
Do good and you will find, if you slip, a helper
Under an eye's watch, when the evildoer falls upon his throat.
Whose eye weeps when the sinner is slain

And do not slake your rage when you prevail; never has
Quench not your rage even if you gain victory
A pious man or a man of distinction quenched his breast's burning.
For piety, not fury, cures the heart's sickness

None has died of rage like the enviers of a noble man
No rancor kills like that of the envious
Whose choice of pardon turned him from exacting vengeance.
Whose choice is pardon over drawing the sword

And has one who did not curb his rage in victory ever died
Who dies of rage, but the patient, victoriously
Without violating honor and tearing away the veil,
Without violating honor or rending the veil

And God's people condemning his deed for God's sake?
Allah's saints deny vengeance in Allah's name
So how much loss befell him from that gain!
So what profit in loss did the vengeful earn?

He judged his enemies, with the ruling also in his own favor,
Judging for oneself spites one's own soul
Though he had no authority in either case.
Neither judgment nor vengeance can command

For judging one's own case and ruling on one's enemies
Scholars agree: to judge and avenge
Are, by the scholars' consensus, among the gravest wrongs.
Oneself is among the greatest sins
وكانand was هوhe القاضيthe judge وكانand was الذيthe one who ادعىmade the claim
وكانand was إذاthen (apparently إذًا) الأشهادthe witnesses بلغتI was told عنabout عمروʿAmr
He was the judge, and he was the one who made the claim;
He was the judge, complainant and witness
And then he was the witnesses: 'I was told about ʿAmr.'
If witnesses spoke of Amr, he would say
فقيلso it was said لهto him بلغتI was told ليسis not شهادةtestimony
فقالso he said وهلand do أرجوI hope for شهوداًwitnesses وليwhile mine is أمريmy affair
So he was told: '“I was told” is not testimony.'
"Their testimony is useless; my will prevails"
He said, 'Should I seek witnesses when the matter is mine?'
Had this been hidden, we could understand

منof الناسpeople قلناwe would have said كانwas ذلكthat فيin السرsecret
Had this judgment been given away from a gathering
But with no peer or superior to restrain
Of people, we would have said, 'That was done in secret.'
Or censure his lapse, what can we say?
فلاso not منbefore ذوىthose of أرضearth تحاشىhe shrank back ولاnor سماheaven
ولاnor ردهturned him back عنfrom سهوهhis lapse زجرthe rebuke of ذيone possessing زجرrebuke
Yet he shrank neither before those on earth nor before heaven,
If he knew his wrong, a disaster; if not, worse-
Nor did a rebuker's rebuke turn him from his lapse.
To judge unjustly in ignorance!
فإنfor if كانwas يدريhe knows ماwhat قضيhe judged فمصيبةthen a calamity
وأعظمand greater منthan ذاthat انif قضيhe judged وهوwhile he لاnot يدريknows
For if he knew what he judged, that is a calamity;
And worse than that is if he judged without knowing.
