ياO ليلُnight of جبلةَJibla هلis there? لفجركfor your dawn مطلعُa rising

O night of Jibla, will your dawn ever break?
O night of Jabalah, does your dawn have a rising?
Far from it! I have called to one who does not hear.
Alas, I called out to one who does not hear!
يمشيwalks الهوينىat a slow, gentle pace نحوtoward جبلةJibla صبحهاher dawn
كرهاreluctantly وحينand when يسيرtravels عنهاaway from her يسرعُhastens
Jibla's dawn walks slowly toward her,
The passionate one walks toward the dawn of Jabalah,
reluctantly; and when it leaves her, it hastens.
Reluctantly, and when he walks away from it, he hastens.
ويقيمand stays فيهاin her ساعةan hour متلفتاًglancing about
ويغيبand disappears باقيthe rest of دهرهits lifetime لاnot يرجعُreturns
And it stays there an hour, glancing about,
He stays there an hour, looking around,
and disappears for the rest of its life, never returning.
Then is absent for the rest of his life, never to return.
لاdo not تنكرنَّreproach عليهagainst it قطعsevering وصالهاcontact with her
فوصالfor contact with أرضa land مثلlike جبلةJibla يقطعَis severed
Do not reproach it for severing its bond with her,
Do not blame him for cutting off his visit with her,
for ties with a land like Jibla are severed.
For even a connection to a land like Jabalah may be cut off.
وإذاand if تهاميa man from Tihama تشكىcomplains of ضيعةneglect

And if a man from Tihama complains of neglect
And if she complains of abandonment in anguish,
in Taizz, he is even more neglected in the land of Jibla.
He is more lost in the land of Jabalah.
