ولي بكمُ على العزِّ الخيارُ
My dwelling beneath humiliation’s shadow is a disgrace.
My abode is under the shade of humiliation and shame,
And through you, the choice of honor is mine.
Yet I have the choice of glory and honor.

What have I to do with submission to every villain,
I rise each morn submitting to every low
a base man who neither grants protection nor receives it?
Wretched one, with no protector or ally.

The chiefs of the people have learned that I,
The chiefs know I am neighbor to the lean hyena
despite hardship, am neighbor to the constellation al-Jawza.
As I dwell beside the deer.

And Nur al-Din’s sword stands in my defense;
If Nur ad-Din's sharp sword is drawn against me,
when he brandishes it, flight outstrips it,
Fear will outrun me when I try to flee.

The resolves of one far-reaching in purpose, steadfast—
The resolute warrior takes the loot as prizes;
the revolving celestial sphere dreads his might.
The circling sphere of heaven fears his might.

That mingles with the water of his dignity.

For I have no victory but through you.

When you are its light?
