شلتmay it be paralyzed يمينthe right hand حوادثcalamities الأيامِthe days
شلت يمين حوادث الأيامِ
فلقدfor indeed حكمنthey ruled وجرنand they acted unjustly فيin الأحكامjudgments
فلقد حكمن وجرن في الأحكام
May the right hand of the days’ calamities be paralyzed!
The days have paralyzed my right hand,
For they have ruled and been unjust in their judgments.
For we have judged and dragged in the judgments.
سدتthey barred طريقthe path العرفkindness ماwhat lies بينbetween الورىhumankind
سدت طريق العرف ما بين الورى
وتحكمتand they held sway فيover النقضannulment والإِبرامand ratification
وتحكمت في النقض والإِبرام
They barred the path of kindness among humankind,
We have blocked the way of dignity among people,
and held sway over annulment and ratification.
And we have controlled annulment and obligation.
إنيindeed I لأعذرI certainly excuse فيfor جفاءcoldness أحبتيmy loved ones
إني لأعذر في جفاء أحبتي
خصميmy foe الزمانTime وقدand indeed أطاَلَhas prolonged خصاميits feud with me
خصمي الزمان وقد أطاَلَ خصامي
Indeed, for my loved ones’ coldness, I excuse
I excuse the aloofness of my loved ones,
my foe, Time, which has prolonged its feud with me.
My opponent is time, and it has prolonged my feud.
مازالتhave never ceased الأيامthe days توجعto hurt أهلهاtheir people
مازالت الأيام توجع أهلها
وتخصand they single out بالبلوىwith affliction ذوىthose possessing الأفهامunderstanding
وتخص بالبلوى ذوى الأفهام
The days have never ceased to hurt their people,
The days still hurt their people,
and single out the discerning for affliction.
And afflict the wise with tribulations.
وظننتand I suspected لكنbut ماnot ظننتI suspected بأنهthat it
وظننت لكن ما ظننت بأنه
يفرىit rends ويقطعand it cuts جلدتيmy skin بحساميwith my sword
يفرى ويقطع جلدتي بحسامي
And I suspected, but never suspected that it
But I did not expect that it would unsheathe,
would rend and cut my skin with my own sword.
And cut through my skin with its swords.
