May God show me your head, O Salah,

passed about by spearheads and spears.

As they rise, with you lying slain upon them,

spearheads and sword blades divide you among themselves.

You have indeed extinguished a light for Islam,

from which learning and righteousness shine.

You murdered God's friends in oppression

and aggression, with recklessness driving you on.

And I incurred your Lord's wrath, not praise,

nor reward; your honor lies open to violation.

You murdered Ahmad, and a pillar collapsed

of faith, and generosity died out.

So do not rejoice in shedding Ibn Zayd's blood,

for his killer can hope for no success.

For he has no helper but the Creator,

no support to count on, and no weapon.

Expect destruction, for it has drawn near,

and wings have already sprouted on the ants.

And take what awaits you—brace yourself for every affliction,

which, when it reaches you, says, 'No escape!'

May God show me your dwellings deserted,

with winds strewing dust across their courtyards.

And may they remain forever a halting place for death,

where every calamity finds a roaming ground.

You brandished your fettered weapon against those

whose weapons are supplication and the opening invocation.

You killed the fasting while they were prostrate,

communing with God, with cries of lamentation.

And they were not, as you knew, men of war,

nor was there among them a youth inclined to combat.

Indeed, as for their souls, they struggled against them,

as one fights enemies, until they found rest.

And the gardens were adorned for them, and they were led in procession

to their paradise, going forth morning and evening.

My life as ransom for the gray hair you stained

with blood; the plains now cover it with dust.

My life as ransom for that honor, purified

    of defilement and miserly disposition.

The buildings and dictated lectures weep for him,

and books of learning and eloquent words.

And his noble deeds lament him when recounted

aloud, as do the authentic traditions.

And night's darkness weeps for him, if he is forgotten in sleep

by the sons of this world; and morning weeps for him.

I shall weep for him and exhaust my tears for him,

and there is no reproach upon me, nor any sin.

So, oh the sorrow, and oh the grief for him!

Recklessness has indeed grown mighty against righteousness.

May your right hand be paralyzed, O Salah Din,

while you are its corruption, not its righteousness.

You deceive them with empty show and dignified bearing,

and preaching that is outright falsehood.

And of no use to you are the fine words

you embellish, while your deeds are vile.

You turned aside from the straightened, lofty spears,

when death the slaughterer had drawn near through them,

and made for the mosques, violating

sanctities that may never be violated.

You take revenge on the weak, the abased,

and in helplessness, disgrace comes to light.

You committed a shameful deed; condemnation for it

is forever obligatory against you, not merely permissible.

A king will be angered on his behalf, O wretch,

beside whom a lion's roar is mere barking.

Through al-Mumahhad I shall exact my vengeance on you,

even if the winds carry you flying through the sky.

For God's party has a claim upon him,

an assured claim that he will not cast aside.

It is as though I see the armies already surrounding your home,

and the thunderbolts and the shouting,

while you are prey in the hands of death,

which may choose for you the manner of your death.
