In God—glory be to Him—is recompense for those who have passed away.
In God the Glorious, for those who passed before
So let not excessive grief and sorrow take their toll on you.
Let not the excess of sorrow and regret afflict you

Nor let the enormity of any matter terrify you.
And let not that which appears formidable appall you
For what deep darkness does not disperse?
For what darkness does not get dispelled?

الدهرُ بالناس لا يحرى إلى أمدٍ

Time's course with humankind has no fixed end;
Time does not consider people for long
For if they run with it, at some limit they must stop.
If they move along with it, they stop at an end

Most worthy of patient endurance is a calamity
The best thing deserving of fine patience are misfortunes
That cannot be escaped, and a turn of fate that will not turn aside.
Inevitable, with no turning away

And whatever one hopes to benefit from—
And everything from which benefit is expected
A discerning man's spending his life on it is waste.
The wise spend their lives striving for it

If grief could restore anything lost,
If something gone could come back, sorrow
Through it we would exact redress from time's vicissitudes.
We would ransom it from the turns of fate

But death is an ailment with no remedy
And a pursuer that overtakes whoever turns away from it.
And the seeker of attainment turns away from it

Death terrifies us greatly at its onslaught;
Death terrifies us greatly when it attacks
And we deny the event awhile, then acknowledge it.
And we deny the matter, then admit

Like a sheep that startled a flock, which returned to her
It startled a flock, so it shivered
In fear; and the ungrazed meadow distracted it from her.
From fear while the soft meadow diverted it

And time continues to make us laugh and cry
Through its turns; in this way our forebears passed on.
With its turns, and so did past generations

And God's chosen ones, their ranks are not hidden
For a man does not know where he will pluck the fruit.
The youth cannot know from where to pluck

A covering for the beloved he halts at

Regain your solace, so that all the people may be consoled;
Look at people's conduct altogether
For they have settled into sorrow and secluded themselves.
For they stood by sorrows and clung

So you see none but one with a burning heart
And one whose eye sheds tears from its pupil.
And none but one whose eyelids a human hides

No wonder they panic at the horror of an accident
That nearly made their backbones snap.
That almost tore their loins apart

Indeed, we are bound for God; the calamity is a night of deep darkness,
We belong to God. As for tribulations in the dark night
But by your face its darkness is dispelled.
Through your face radiance bursts forth from them

We are ransoms. So no matter what misfortunes befall
An arrow, our souls stand before you as the target.
Our souls without you are the target

When a number passes away, He creates others in their place
This one comes, and that one departs from you.
One comes and one turns away from you

And the moon of your good fortune is full, never eclipsed.
And the full moon of your fortune never wanes

Who can ask time to erase his sins
For it comes forward, confessing its guilt.
When he comes with confessed sins

It followed its nature with those who sacrificed themselves for you
As of old—yet pearls and shells are not equal.
Steps and pearls are not equal to seashells

So its bloom faded and its looks turned white
And it wished that destruction had carried it off.
And it wished it had perished

Force your soul to patience however much sorrow pierces it
No softness or splintering in calamity, however it assails.
In calamity, however slight or strong

And restrain the path of anguish and grief and make them forget
For with them there is neither help nor high ground for refuge.
For they have no rescue or palms there

In God—glory be to Him—is recompense for those who have passed away.
