In defiance of the way of the best of non-Arabs and Arabs,

its mosques have become places for diversion and play.

    He—God bless him—never commanded us

to beat a tambourine, play pipes, or sound reeds.

Rather, he stopped his ears against a shepherd's piping,

protecting them, and us, from these amusements.

Your Lord condemned people whose conduct was

lighter than yours: the polytheists among the Arabs.

Long ago, their prayer beside His House was

whistling and handclapping, in bygone ages.

That means whistling and clapping; your conduct

is uglier than theirs, so do not cavil.

The effect of striking with the palm is less than the tambourine's,

and a mouth's whistle is unlike whistling through reeds.

He did not condemn their handclapping merely for their sake,

since, beside their unbelief, this scarcely counts.

Rather, He condemned their conduct to warn us

against sharing with them what provokes His wrath,

and against engaging in anything in His mosques

other than worship, the Qur'an, and acts of devotion,

and to establish for us, against you, in the Book,

proofs from it sufficient for every seeker of reward.

For He knew what His revealed Law would encounter

from you, so He turned you back from it upon your heels.

You disgraced us and made our mosques,

though safeguarded, like taverns for amusement.

    You confused the faith and altered its beauties;

you did to it what fire does to wood.

Whoever among you said, 'I am God,' built himself honor

among you, and a station rising above all ranks.

If you are asked why your companion said

    this—this utterance of a sharp-tongued renegade—

you say, 'He became pure, negated his self, and remained

with his Lord: thus he is He in every turning.'

Some of you said that God told him,

'Ask the least of the servants for whatever you wish; he will give.'

I saw its letters in Indian notation,

written among you in the worst of writings.

    فصفق الكل بالأيدي من اللعب

    I saw it, with other men beside me;

then everyone clapped their hands in amusement.

What they saw of his audacity alarmed them,

and the perpetrator of monstrous unbelief and falsehood.

Do you conceal this man's utterance

without zeal for the Creator or indignation?

You concealed it through the numerical values of letters, so that

people would not see the dubious things you hide.

I ask God's forgiveness for recalling your utterance:

heat scorches whoever approaches the flame.

No one has ever done harm like yours

to the Prophet—a statement that is no lie.

You made his religion a mockery and a laughingstock

for every adherent among the people of every prophet.

Far from it! By God, his religion has no crookedness,

nor does his creed offer grounds for a conscientious critic.

He never called us to anything for which we might be faulted,

nor to an act of his that demeans a man of lineage.

    انظر محاسنه في البدء والعقب

    Look at his commands; look at his prohibitions;

look at his beauties, from beginning to end.

I marvel at someone who condemns gathering to

perform the Ragha'ib prayer in Sha'ban or Rajab,

    فما لفاعلها أجر سوى النصب

    and says, 'The act is forbidden, for it was innovated;

its performer earns nothing but toil,'

yet permits a gathering in our mosques

for amusements, beating tambourines, and playing reeds.

You approved doing this in your mosques,

saying, 'It is an inheritance from father to father.'

Do not lord it over us in our mosques,

for they were established for companionship and books,

for prayer and glorifying God—not amusement

that tempts a grown man into childishness.

Keep away from God's houses, and commit

whatever you wish; dance and kneel upon your knees,

following whoever serves as your example—not the Prophet, nor

the Prophet's family, nor his noble Companions.

They said, 'We danced as the Abyssinians danced

in the Chosen One's mosque.' We answered, without falsehood:

'The Abyssinians did not dance; rather, they played

with weapons of war: spears and leather armor.

Learning that kind of play is recommended

under the Law, training every novice for war.

Weapons of war possess a merit permitting those

who sport with them to receive money for victory.'

Do you cite what the Abyssinians said

before the Prophet, which he neither censured nor faulted,

to justify what he stopped his ears

against, turning swiftly away without returning,

and doing what the Lord of the worlds condemned

for being done—while every offense is lighter than it?

From him, concerning the safeguarding of his mosque, have come

traditions sufficient for those seeking knowledge,

such as his saying there, about announcing a lost possession,

'May God not return it!'—an indignant censurer's words.

The ugliest thing your conviction concealed is

that worship lies in some form of musical delight.

God did not condemn the polytheists merely because they whistled

    and clapped beside God's House for amusement;

rather, He condemned them because amusement became, for them,

like prayer, and they counted it among acts of devotion.

    تعلم زيادة قبح الفعل بالسبب

    Read, if you wish, 'Their prayer was nothing but...';

you will learn how its purpose increases the deed's ugliness.

    Your Lord never said, 'Shout and dance';

rather, He said, 'Pray, fast, and beware My wrath.'

Suppose, as you claim, the Abyssinians did dance:

a well-mannered man would not follow them in religion,

since they are slaves and followers, all alike,

who resort to neither reason nor good breeding.

Dancing does not demean them such that

our Prophet should rebuke them; it demeans a man of lineage.

Did any Companion rise among them to dance with them,

from the house of Hashim or the other Arabs?

Far from it! Those men were too pure and clean

to commit a disgrace among these disgraces.

A dancer is not an upright witness,

since a habitual dancer has no dignity among the clans.

Dignity is the foundation of religion; if you lose it,

you lose your religion: preserve it through dignity, and do right.

You said that women played tambourines

on a feast day, without being rebuked for playing.

Rather, the best of humankind said, 'Leave them: for us it is

a feast.' We replied, 'What is surprising in that?'

Women had come out on the day of his arrival,

beating tambourines before the command of veiling.

For women, beating a tambourine has

no ugliness, especially when there is a reason.

Women have matters reserved to them,

unlike men, such as wearing silk fabric and gold.

By God, a doctrine whose proofs are these

has nothing among the proofs but a feeble support.

from which his honor stands far removed.

If he permitted singing and tambourines at a wedding,

you made that his religion, inscribed in the books.

You said, 'The messengers listened to singing'; indeed,

you ventured upon an enormous, unprecedented thing.

You portrayed him, silent beside a girl,

young in years, not yet mature and not censured,

with little girls, at ease with her, singing beside her

on a feast day, without diversion or musical delight,

as one serenaded—how evil the way

your tongue ran against his honor! May you fail.

By God, you erred! Neither the Prophet nor

any beneath him is described by the manners you recount.

Singing is the emblem of those devoted to falsehood; indeed,

you encouraged doubters and the suspicious to doubt.

How often you rejoice in sayings that diminish

the standing of mosques or disparage a prophet!

You repeat the Abyssinians' entry into his mosque,

though that was one day, with no second afterward.

Perhaps this was the day they dismantled

the roof and gathered to carry the timber.

You said, 'Ibn 'Ajil used to attend it,

a man greater than I'—such is the height of courtesy!

I replied, 'He forbids it' means 'he prevents it,'

in the usage of intelligent people and Arabic speech.

He did not mean 'he enters it'; his piety prevents him

from grazing in any harmful pasture or drinking pestilent water.

    You substituted dad for za in your wording;

    whoever listens badly answers badly.

did circles ever form around Ahmad

in former times, of Muslims and Companions,

with their singer standing among them, like yours,

to beat tambourines and pipe upon reeds,

while they sat until some sprang

to their feet, and all surged like a noisy throng,

and this one spent the night dancing and trembling,

while that one fell prostrate, motionless,
