From the horizon, over the lamps, extinguishing them.

And these tongues of the strings have spoken,

So listen; those are wine's breezes—breathe them in.

We are in a garden through which the breeze flows,

Clothing the water in a coat of closely linked mail.

There the slender boughs resemble beloveds,

Some drawing drink from it, others drinking at dusk.

The roses there are cheeks aflame with bashfulness,

And the fresh narcissus is like eyelids and pupils.

Incense is a cloud, and rosewater its downpour,

And wine in the cup mimics lightning amid the whiteness.

The fragrant herbs and flowers, scattered about, bear

The colors of chrysolite, ruby, and silver:

When the cloud appeared in its thick-woven mantles.

And the birds' orators warbled, cooing,

Upon the boughs, in a lovely, enchanting melody.

The cup kisses a mouth on behalf of its pearls—

How wondrous!—and dons a robe of twilight.

Or the anemone-red it bears, or a burning blaze?

In kingship,' I reply: 'The verdict rests on character.'

With taking all he gives, the task could not be managed.

O king whose bird of fortune is auspicious,

At the feast you are nothing but the light in the pupils.

In truth: had you not appeared, it would not have delighted.
