Let no dismay seize you at what has happened.

Such are the times; let what you see not appall you.

For God knows that in you, for His creatures,

there is abundant goodness, too great to be counted.

Some people did not know it, yet none remained

among the people, when you suffered, who did not know.

You did indeed suffer, and they almost devoured

one another, the greater preying on the lesser.

So the Creator showed them someone other than you, that they might submit,

and restored your kingdom to your hands, that you might give thanks.

God has special care for you, and for its sake

He meets you with a reminder, that you may take heed.

What are ʿAbs and al-Habshāʾ? Those are tribes

like weak birds, too insignificant to be mentioned.

But God showed you something of His sovereignty,

so that one may know your Lord's command more fully.

Consider Solomon the prophet: when he was heedless

of some duty owed to God and fell short,

the Lord of heaven cast upon his throne

a body, and gave it power over him for months,

until he repented; then your Lord restored his kingdom

when he turned back to his Lord and sought forgiveness.

So return to Him, for He tests none

of His creatures but the most beloved and the choicest.

And erase the name of Kisra the Persian, for

his justice is proverbial among humankind.

Or are you not, compared with Kisra and all they cite him for,

more deserving and worthier, O son of the noblest?

Someone had already brought me glad tidings of this on your behalf,

in a dream, O king of humankind—a bearer of good news.

I recounted that vision to you, and I was not seen

watching for its promises, waiting in expectation.

My soul be your ransom! Yesterday you had charged me

with a task through which your Lord's good pleasure is bought.

The superintendent brought it, and we reached agreement,

so that we wrote those lines concerning it.

Peoples rejoiced, and our hands were outstretched

for you, in prayer to God, again and again.

    Hasten to good deeds, and fulfill a promise;

through it, He will fulfill every greater promise to you.

And send your armies through the lands, surging across them,

until you raise dust in every land.

Fill the breadth of the deserts with them, and exact redress

from those who sought corruption in some of the towns.

For God will grant them victory, and send ahead of them,

from His presence, another army bearing victory.
