In you, O refuge of kings and dynasties, I have

many times the hope I place in anyone else.

ان احسن الأقوام لي في قولهم

ان احسن الأقوام لي في قولهم

احسنت أي والله قولا وعمل

احسنت أي والله قولا وعمل

If people have shown me kindness in their words,

you have shown it—yes, by God—in word and deed.

أو قلدوني منة واحدة

أو قلدوني منة واحدة

قلدتني أضعافها ولم تزل

قلدتني أضعافها ولم تزل

Or if they have adorned me with a single favor,

you have adorned me with many times as much, and still do.

وجه حييى ويد سخية

وجه حييى ويد سخية

وهمة عليا وعزم لا يفل

وهمة عليا وعزم لا يفل

A modest face and a generous hand,

and lofty aspiration, and resolve that cannot be blunted;

ومنصب عال وسعد قائم

ومنصب عال وسعد قائم

ويقظة منها العدو في وجل

ويقظة منها العدو في وجل

and high rank and abiding good fortune,

and vigilance that leaves the enemy in dread.

فيابني معيبد بخ لكم

فيابني معيبد بخ لكم

بسيد منكم إذا قال فعل

بسيد منكم إذا قال فعل

So, sons of Muʿaybid, congratulations to you

on a lord from among you who does what he says.

لا يتقي يوم النزال باسه

لا يتقي يوم النزال باسه

ولا يرد قوله يوم الجدل

ولا يرد قوله يوم الجدل

His might cannot be warded off on the day of battle,

nor can his word be refuted on the day of debate.

إن الشهاب جوهر عنصره

إن الشهاب جوهر عنصره

مهذب الأصلين مافيه دخل

مهذب الأصلين مافيه دخل

Indeed, al-Shihab is a jewel by nature,

pure in both lineages, with no taint in him.

سن حديث وخصال كهلة

سن حديث وخصال كهلة

فأعجب له من يافع قدا كتهل

فأعجب له من يافع قدا كتهل

Young in years, yet mature in character—

so marvel at him: a youth already mature!

قد طبقت هيبته الأرض وعم

قد طبقت هيبته الأرض وعم

صيته منها السهول والجبل

صيته منها السهول والجبل

The awe he inspires has covered the earth; all-pervading

is his fame throughout its plains and mountains.

أحسن به الظن فما خاب امرؤ

أحسن به الظن فما خاب امرؤ

عليه بعد الله في الأمر اتكل

عليه بعد الله في الأمر اتكل

Think well of him: no one has been disappointed

who, after God, has relied on him in his affairs.

مولاي ما في الناس إلا شاكر

مولاي ما في الناس إلا شاكر

بثنى عليك لا يني ولا يمل

بثنى عليك لا يني ولا يمل

My lord, everyone among the people gives thanks,

praising you, never flagging or tiring.

لم يبق في الأصحاب غير خامل

لم يبق في الأصحاب غير خامل

بل كلهم على مناه قد حصل

بل كلهم على مناه قد حصل

None remains among the companions but an obscure man—

nay, every one of them has attained his wish.

لو اعرتني لحظك فرد نظرة

لو اعرتني لحظك فرد نظرة

أدركت أقصى السؤل منها والأمل

أدركت أقصى السؤل منها والأمل

If you would lend me your gaze for a single glance,

I would attain through it my utmost wish and hope.

أسهل شيء عندم مطالبي

أسهل شيء عندم مطالبي

لو أنها كانت على رأس زحل

لو أنها كانت على رأس زحل

My requests are the easiest of things for you,

even if they lay upon Saturn's summit.

إذا رضى ضيفك بالماء قرى

إذا رضى ضيفك بالماء قرى

فأغسله بالما سامحاً ولا أقل

فأغسله بالما سامحاً ولا أقل

If your guest is content with water as his welcome,

then bathe him generously in water—and do no less.

لازلت في حفظ الإله أينما

لازلت في حفظ الإله أينما

وجهت محروساً به عز وجل

وجهت محروساً به عز وجل

May you ever remain in God's protection, wherever

you turn, guarded by Him—mighty and majestic is He.
