O you whose gifts include victory and triumph

over enemies, whether few or many.

    بذكركم قد يزولُ الخوفُ والحذرُ

    When we fear, we feel safe as we remember you;

through remembering you, fear and apprehension can vanish.

Your beneficence has no limit we could encompass,

nor is it bounded by the measure of the sea's waters.

Each day something new from you comes knocking:

fresh bounty like the sea's tide, not mere raindrops.

You give to one from whom another exacts tribute, relying

on God—what excellent support and refuge!

Others would collect what you freely bestowed,

and even the giver does not give a tenth.

And whatever God's blessings have flowed through

    cannot be diminished by spending.

When you rose against the enemies, they were shaken

by the dread through which God's prophets were granted victory.

Yesterday you pardoned them, while swords

encircled them, flying toward their necks.

So they were sheathed, yet, in rage and fury

against them, they were gaping mouths in their scabbards' bellies,

until they disobeyed you, beguiled by their safety

and the memory of your life-giving pardon; they took no heed.

And your pardon stood ashamed, repeatedly assailed

with reproach by bright, keen blades and tawny spears.

Then, when this resolve was unsheathed against them,

and the full moon told them of death's approach,

and they knew that bright blades, held back yesterday,

had returned today, sparing nothing and leaving nothing,

they declared repentance and came to meet you with it,

seeking pardon from one who forgives wrongdoing.

Then sacred law held you back from them, and in their case you obeyed

a command you have always observed for God's sake.

And they swore that never afterward would you hear

of a deed prompting the words, 'They have been ungrateful for bounty.'

So I returned, as jewels return to an unadorned woman,

to Zabid, and bounty returned, and bounty.

So live happy and praised, never expecting

victory and triumph to draw near from anyone but God.
