هكذا فلتكن إِلى الغلمانِ

في المهمات غارةُ السلطانِ

Thus let it be against the youths—

the sultan's raid in grave affairs.

قلت للرسل إذ اتتك تترى

قلت للرسل إذ اتتك تترى

بكتابٍ محرفِ العنوانِ

بكتابٍ محرفِ العنوانِ

You said to the messengers, as they came to you in succession,

with a letter whose heading was distorted:

ما جوابي على الكتاب كتابٌ

ما جوابي على الكتاب كتابٌ

بل جوابي كتائبُ الفرسانِ

بل جوابي كتائبُ الفرسانِ

"My reply to the letter is not a letter;

rather, my reply is squadrons of horsemen.

اسبق الطير يهوي لوكرٍ

اسبق الطير يهوي لوكرٍ

في جواب الصريخِ إذ ناداني

في جواب الصريخِ إذ ناداني

I outstrip the bird swooping toward its nest,

in answering the caller for help when he called me."

فطوى الأَرض في المسير إِليهم

فطوى الأَرض في المسير إِليهم

طي خيلِ السباقِ للميدانِ

طي خيلِ السباقِ للميدانِ

Then he folded up the earth on his march toward them,

as racehorses fold up the course.

سبق الرسلَ وهي تجهد سعياً

سبق الرسلَ وهي تجهد سعياً

وأتتهم وراءه يوم ثاني

وأتتهم وراءه يوم ثاني

He outstripped the messengers, though they strained in haste,

and they reached them after him the next day.

كان منه الخروجَ آخر شعبا

كان منه الخروجَ آخر شعبا

نَ وباقي الليال قرب الثماني

نَ وباقي الليال قرب الثماني

His departure was toward the end of Sha'ban,

with nearly eight nights remaining.

فقضي ما قضى وأصلح ما شاء

فقضي ما قضى وأصلح ما شاء

ووافي ونحنُ في شعبانِ

ووافي ونحنُ في شعبانِ

So he accomplished what he did and set right what he wished,

and arrived while we were still in Sha'ban.

ما رأينا ملكاً سعيدا كيحيى

ما رأينا ملكاً سعيدا كيحيى

يتوخى رضاه صرِفُ الزمانِ

يتوخى رضاه صرِفُ الزمانِ

We have seen no king as fortunate as Yahya,

whose pleasure the vicissitudes of time seek.

إِن يحيى ولا يكون كيحيى

إِن يحيى ولا يكون كيحيى

فرحة الأوليا وغيظ الشاني

فرحة الأوليا وغيظ الشاني

Indeed, Yahya—and none can be like Yahya—

is his friends' joy and his foe's vexation.

انقضى عنك شهرُ شعبان يثني

انقضى عنك شهرُ شعبان يثني

وأتاك البشير عن رمضانِ

وأتاك البشير عن رمضانِ

The month of Sha'ban has left you, singing your praise,

and Ramadan's herald has come to you,

برضى عنك من إله تعالى

برضى عنك من إله تعالى

وبعفو الذنوب والغفرانِ

وبعفو الذنوب والغفرانِ

with favor toward you from God Most High,

and with pardon for sins and forgiveness.

جاء يمحو ذنب الشهور سواه

جاء يمحو ذنب الشهور سواه

بصيام النهارِ والقرآن

بصيام النهارِ والقرآن

It has come to erase the sins of the other months,

through fasting by day and the Qur'an.

صم به واغسل الذنوبَ لتبقى

صم به واغسل الذنوبَ لتبقى

ملكاً من ملائك الرحمنِ

ملكاً من ملائك الرحمنِ

Fast in it and wash away sins, that you may remain

an angel among the angels of the Most Merciful.

واستضعف فيه فوق ملكك هذا

واستضعف فيه فوق ملكك هذا

خير ملكٍ تحظى به الجنانَ

خير ملكٍ تحظى به الجنانَ

And deem weak [wording unclear], in it, beyond this kingdom of yours,

the finest dominion through which you attain the Gardens.
