Ours is whatever we seek, whether near or far,

whether passion hastens us to seize it or is slow.

We resolve, yet are turned from the deed because we

are strong, fearing neither loss nor wrath.

We grant respite by choice; we grant none to a man

who transgresses; nor do our spears make sudden, unprovoked seizures.

A servant's offense dwindles beside our pardon,

even if he has committed something whose like warrants wrath.

We stand free of passions, and our souls soar

when people's passions bring them to utter ruin.

Travel is no business of kings; is it not ours,

whenever we will, to withhold from people and bestow?

O you who deem pardon and favor slow in coming,

by my life, you have deemed slow what is not slow.

    Your ingratitude for kindness withholds our bounty;

nor is your gratitude for blessings a condition of our generosity.

    جعلنا لكل من مواهبنا قسطا

    Many are the faithful and treacherous among mankind;

we have allotted each a share of our gifts.

The greatest fool among God's creatures thinks a charm

will protect him, then offers his limb to the speckled snake.

He who butts unyielding rock has no discernment,

nor does a man of sense wrench hard at the reins of death.

No man among mankind has ridden a mount

more harmful than ruinous ignorance, nor ever mounted one.

Indeed, the ignorant man may, through his ignorance,

be fiercer against himself than whatever makes war on him.

In ignorance you turned to corruption in the land,

and made a pact with a band to attack those around you by night.

What you did not know of us deceived you, although we

indeed excuse a wrongdoer who errs through ignorance.

When a man's character holds him back, he turns

against you; however much you raise him, he sinks.

You penned excuses that proved unsound,

shaming both page and script by setting them down.

Every hearer hangs his head at them

in shame, and the reciter's hand cuts them apart.

You mentioned pledges you had not even partly fulfilled,

and favors you have come to scorn utterly.

You reminded us of some of our past bounty:

the giver has indeed forgotten, but the recipient has not.

We are a people who remember promises to fulfill them,

yet a man of ours forgets his lavish gift once given.

    ومطلوبنا منا قريب ولو شطا

    Whoever pursues us is far from us, even when near;

whoever we pursue is near us, however far away.

We harm when we will and benefit whom we will,

and dispense stern refusal and open-hearted courtesy.

You claimed that the envious had fabricated lies

against you; we turned a blind eye, though they clamored loudly.

Enough! You have revealed the character of one ignorant

of our ways, who has penned no line in understanding them.

I am the sea: can buckets cloud a sea

whose green depths know no shore?

What but our spacious courts can bring opposites together?

We string them as a necklace on the thread of our kindness.

Our forbearance and bounty embrace mankind: a sinner

is met with kindness, and a pretender receives gifts.

Our command is ours; no man has power with us

to raise or lower people according to his whims.

If words could ever provoke us,

then their speakers would claim the power to loose and bind.

When the horses of intrigue run wild before us,

we hold their halters fast with sound judgment.

    فآراؤنا صرف فما نعرف الخلطا

    One may share our wealth, but not our sovereignty;

for our judgments are pure; we know no admixture.

We keep an eye of noble pardon over a man:

when slanderers bare his faults, it veils them.

People think, from the pardon at our side, that

a servant gains favor with us if he errs.

If they knew what the obedient have with us,

they would rush toward it, necks outstretched, trotting and bounding.

O man who wronged his own soul, which

we raised aloft, but he cast down low!

He had gardens of date palms and grapevines,

but went to excess until he received tamarisk and bitter-fruited trees instead.

If you come ashamed of your sin, repentant,

and return, compelled, to your moderate course,

our door is not shut against one hoping for pardon,

nor is our withholding ever such as to rule out giving.
