Your approval of me is joined to the Creator’s approval.

Whoever loses it is cheated, even if granted his wishes.

    I ask God’s forgiveness for a sin I committed,

which angered you, and for words that were not good.

I bit my palm until I nearly ate it,

so great was my remorse, and my heart melted with sorrow.

O benefactor, whom I can never thank enough,

even if I offered my life as the price of his approval.

Never! No son can repay his father

a tenth of the favors his father’s hand has hung about his neck.

I am ruined unless, as before, I am embraced

by your approval of me—and can I ever do without your approval?

By God, you are beyond suspicion in your dealings with me,

nor are you to blame; rather, I am the one to blame.

How many favors of yours hang like a collar about my neck,

and how many white hands of kindness and favors of yours rest in my hand!

May my hand be paralyzed whenever I do a thing you hate,

and whenever I lend an ear to what you do not desire.

You turned away from me, so time began pelting me

with its shifting calamities, from here and there.

I became lowly in the eyes of men who have no virtue,

and whoever I call to twists his head away and turns aside.

Because you turned your face from me, I have suffered

an ordeal that made me envy those buried in the dust.

You once cared for me more than I cared for myself—alas

for my former standing, and oh, the sorrow!

When they complained of harm from their times,

in that former state of mine, I had no complaint against time.

And today, through the happiness you bring me, I have become

belittled in people’s eyes, held in contempt.

You are my standing; if you neglect me, down will fall

the foundations and structures you had established.

I shunned others, fearing that some young man might say:

‘This man was no good to his father—will he be good to us?’

And none among their fathers is like you—

so devoted to a son, so sweet in substance and fruit.

What excuse has someone like me, if there spreads among them

this estrangement, when they have already harbored suspicions about me?

And does it befit someone like me to be said to have done

what his father disapproves of, or to have spoken obscenely?

By God, by God, even if you cut me into pieces,

I would only grow in pure affection and praise.

Nor could I repay you, even if I obeyed you in

a command at which my soul would leave my body.

Whenever I recall you angry, I lay my hand

upon a heart grown weak with grief and melted with anguish.

And I would wander distraught, but for former kindnesses; whenever

I recall them, my fluttering heart grows still.

By night it keeps the horizon’s stars company; neither my liver

is cooled, nor does my eyelid know drowsiness.

Who besides him do you see taking me by the hand?

And who but you shows tenderness when I seek tenderness?

Whenever I hope for kindness from someone other than you, I am

like one hoping for milk from a pregnant woman’s breasts.

I have come, and my hopes bring me glad tidings

of good from you; I have revealed what was hidden.

My aim is your approval; if my hands obtain it,

I care not who is pleased and who is grieved.

    يفديك أكبرنا سناً وأصغرنا

    So be safe and endure as long as night grows dark and light appears;

our oldest and youngest would give themselves as your ransom.
