تمنيتI wished لوif only أنthat طالgrew long فيin وصلكمunion with you عمريmy life
كماjust as طالgrew long يومthe day البعدseparation أوor ليلةthe night الهجرestrangement
I wished that my life in union with you might last long,
I wished my life in union with you would stretch on,
as long as the day of parting, or the night of estrangement.
As the day of separation or the night of estrangement stretches on.
لقدindeed كنتI used to أشكوcomplain of الليلthe night فجراًa dawn بلاwithout عشاevening
فقدso now صرتI have come to أشكوهI complain of it عشاءan evening بلاwithout فجرdawn
I once complained that night was mere dawn, with no evening;
Indeed, I once complained of night as dawn without evening;
now I complain it is all evening, with no dawn.
So now I complain of it as evening without dawn.

Our nights lengthen and shorten according to the one
Our nights lengthen and shorten according to which
you keep company with in them, though all are equal in span.
Of them you befriend, though they are equal in duration.
رحلتمyou departed فماso ... not اغمضتI closed جفنيmy eyelid بعدكمafter your departure
علىin هجعةa spell of sleep لكنbut علىupon دمعةa tear تجرىflows
You departed, and since then I have not closed my eyes
You departed; since then I have not closed my eyelid
in slumber, but only upon a tear that runs.
In sleep, but only upon a flowing tear.
أذابتmelted فؤاديmy heart لوعةthe anguish of الحبlove بعدكمafter your departure
فمنso who ليfor me إذاwhen غبتمyou are absent بقلبwith a heart منof الصخرstone
Love’s anguish after you left has melted my heart.
Love's anguish melted my heart after you left;
Who, when you are gone, will give me a heart of stone?
So who, when you are absent, will give me a heart of stone?
فماfor ... not مثلكمone like you ينسىis forgotten ولاnor غيرother than ذكركمremembrance of you
تمرpasses وإنand even if لمnot تذكرواyou are mentioned ليto me علىacross ذكريmy memory
One such as you is never forgotten; nothing but your memory
For one like you is never forgotten; nothing but the memory of you
crosses my mind, though you never remember me for all my remembering.
Passes through my mind, even if you are not mentioned to me.

إذاwhen قلتI say علمنيteach me طريقاًa path إِلىto الصبرpatience
The censor bids me forget, then draws back
The reproacher bids me forget, but draws back
when I say, “Teach me a road to patience.”
When I say, 'Teach me a path to patience.'
إذاif شئتyou wish أنto تعصىbe disobeyed وإنand even if كنتyou are قادراًpowerful

If you wish to be disobeyed, though you have the power,
If you wish to be disobeyed, even though you are powerful,
then command a thing that cannot be done.
Then command a task that cannot be done.
