Through whom shall I shield myself, or from whom expect aid?

Against my will, while my heart was breaking.

And I wrote to him unwillingly, and his reply was
Sweeter than honey—or deadlier than poison.
sweeter than honey, or deadlier than poison.

So I returned, as al-Kusa‘i returned, repentant
For the offense—if only remorse could avail.
for my offense—if only remorse could be dispelled.

I would never in this world bow to anyone but you.

There is no good in sustenance supplied by anyone but you,
Even if it were wider than the whole expanse of earth.
even if it were wider than the earth’s expanse.

I glory in myself, admiring it, since it has come to this:
A soul whose only ambition is to hope in you.
it has no object of desire but hope in you.

By God, I shall let none but you hold my reins—
Among all mankind, so long as the bow can still be drawn.
no man among mankind—while the bow can still be drawn.

No star of my fortune is rising in your sky.
my lucky star has no place to rise in your sky.

O Abu Ahmad, is there an Ashrafi act of kindness
By which the disarray of a shattered heart may be mended?
with which you might gather the fragments of this shattered heart?

O Abu Hasan, open for me an entrance into honor,
O Abu Hasan, give me a way into honor,
For the road to honor with you is broad.
for with you the road to honor lies wide open.

Take my hand, for fate has brought my standing low;
And take my hand, for time has laid me low,
If you neglect me, I shall surely be lost.
and if you neglect me, I shall surely be lost.

Mine is an ancient migration among the earliest,
For mine is a migration of old, among the foremost,
And a pure affection untouched by affectation.
and pure affection with no pretense in it.

And its abundance for you, when shares were apportioned,
and its abundance for you that fortunes were allotted,

A man would raise his gaze toward the stars,
the star would raise its gaze toward me,
As once I raised my gaze toward the stars.
as I used to raise my gaze toward the star.

O you who have loosed passion’s reins, proceed gently;
So, O you who loosen passion’s reins, proceed gently:
For in my eyes you are resolute, not one to lose his way.
for in my eyes you are prudent and will not be lost.

By God, I have wearied neither of loving nor praising
By God, I have not tired of love or praise
Him. Take heart: many a harm will yet prove beneficial.
for him; so be at ease—many a harm will yet bring benefit.

Your wound is bribed with salves from his generosity,
For your wound is bribed by the salves of his generosity,
And your breach—if you widen it—he will patch.
and your rent, if you widen it, he will patch.

At times circumstances close in upon me, and I turn back;
At times my plight hems me in, and I turn back,
Then I recall the outcome of your goodness, and room opens wide.
and recall the outcome of your kindness, and it opens wide.

The sudden charge of hopes comes swiftly.
the forays of hope come swiftly.

Hopes bring me glad tidings of high glory from you,
In any bounty but yours, hopes deceive.
yet apart from your bounty, hopes deceive.

How many a petitioner whose renown lay dead have you revived,
How many a bearer, whose dead renown you brought to life,
So he departed with the banners of distinction raised.
went forth as banners of distinction were raised!

The servant’s duty is to call upon and petition his Lord,
A servant must pray and ask his lord,
For prayer and humble entreaty may benefit the servant.
for prayer and humble supplication may benefit a servant.

I strengthened my right hand and sought protection from mankind
In your bond, O you whose bond is never severed.
by your rope, O you whose rope is never severed.

Held in awe, giving to whom you will and withholding.
and feared, giving to whom you will and withholding.
