May one of the morning rainclouds water you, O Zabid,

resounding as thunders moan within it.

And may lightning's mouth exchange smiles with a dwelling in you,

with which the nights and necklaces exchange smiles.

For you, from the very core of every heart,

were fashioned for whoever desires, just as he desires.

Your soil is ambergris, and your pebbles are pearls.

And your water is Kawthar, and your gazelles are slender and graceful.

And your star is piercingly bright, and your courtyard spacious,

and your shade stretches far along its sides.

And you would be like the Garden of Paradise, if only

immortality did not elude whoever dwelt in you.

Your portico is lovely, and the hall splendid,

and your land has neither descent nor ascent.

You have adopted the ways of Paradise's gardens, so that

your breeze's fragrance is musk and aloeswood.

When will you leave the mountains to people

whose skins and bones are iron?

For there a person is eaten alive,

even if a lofty tower shelters him.

He spends the night, his body a pasture for bedbugs,

and insects come to drink of his blood.

When night falls there, evening finds

skins being torn throughout their reaches.

And cold sets a person dancing,

without delight, while the hardy man shivers.

    And winds that take lives

bring gray hair, yet no infant goes gray because of them.
