A judgment has come to pass, a decree we cannot withstand.

The wise man among us has found his paths constricted.

And a calamity in which the patience of the steadfast was condemned,

Though patience had been praised for its outcomes.

    A calamity struck, a rift with no mending;

It has taken its toll on us—a matter whose departed one is beyond reach.

The tower of the caliphate—its chamber's sun has set,

So the horizon darkened and its edges turned black.

May Time's hand be paralyzed! How blind its insight is

To a pearl into which its claws were driven.

Time is reckless; its judgments are crooked.

If it possessed discernment, we would reproach it.

Oh, the desolation of a dwelling whose inhabitant has gone!

Within it, its absent one returns to loved ones.

It saddens hearts and makes whoever passes it weep—

A dwelling whose places of play were once enlivened by her.

I turn my gaze and my thoughts upon her noble deeds,

And clouds of tears pour down from my eye.

Thought conjures for me a likeness of her form,

Until it seems to me that I am speaking to it.

Far from it! Death has barred the sight of her.

And can one be seen when the grave is their doorkeeper?

My last memory of her is of her wrapped in shrouds,

As someone she does not answer calls her by her names.

She is carried, while the kings of the earth walk

In an army whose battalions the world has grown weary of.

And the breast of open space was too narrow for those escorting her

Among humankind; each man made his companion weep.

And grief came, drawing forth with its burning anguish

The crests of tears, while its throngs surged.

So one pours forth tears, and another scatters his tears

Upon the cheeks, while another's garments have been torn.

And patience lies fallen on the battlefield of sorrows,

Trodden underfoot, while its mourning women have risen.

    فالقلبُ بالحزنِ قد شابت ذوائبهُ

    There I witnessed what turned the heart gray;

So the heart's forelocks have turned gray with grief.

How can I endure, when my liver lies beneath the dust,

Buried, and a beloved whose side is beyond reach?

    نعا لها الترب عيناه وحاجبهُ

    He who wished for her survival heaped earth upon her;

His eyes and brow lamented the dust for her [wording unclear].

Who will bring me a companion in grief in whom I can find solace,

Who spends the evening lamenting sorrow with whoever laments with him?

I weep and he weeps; he recounts to me, and I hear him,

And we pass our lifetime in a life we plunder together.

Oh, my soul's anguish for a lost one, through whom I lost

My beautiful patience; the quest for it has exhausted me.

Give me the open ground; whoever wishes to die, let him die.

No life after her has springs that run clear.

I entrust to God a person whom a grave has enfolded,

Whose virtues can neither be counted nor reckoned.
